I was on the Vedder the other day, caught nothing, but one thing caught my eye.
Many fly fishermen out, say 15, and not one using a single handed rod.
Not one.
Justa whippin' and rippin' those spey lines.

That's because you didn't run into me and my faithful 8-weight Sage XP. ;D
I wouldn't mind if at least some of those guys were using spey or scandi lines, which require a degree of skill level, but almost everyone out on the Vedder these days casts Skagit lines, which can be thrown out there with hardly any training at all.
The way Skagit line casting disturbs the water by frothing it, it is unlikely that there is any fish around them anyway, so I just give them a wide berth.
Fortunately for the rest of us, most spey guys like to stick to one same run for hours on end. And they prefer the ugly lower river, so who cares? :D
So, when are you buying a spey rod, Sasha? ;)

Ha,ha Milo, not going to happen.
Somehow I seem love the pain and suffering of fishing with roe.
Although I must say they can sure cast far.
Also it's a nice way to make sure there is nobody fishing beside you within 20 yards when you are ripping that line across the water.
This was just above the place I saw you last time fishing.
There were many people fishing the area and no tales of fish at all.

i too was out today with my single hand 8# ;D ;D but i was accompanied with a spey rod and a gear rod as companions. i only say one other fly guy with a spey.

The serious part: I am convinced that frothing the water with whatever those water loading casts are called disturbs all the fish that is usually holding closer to shore - where lie most of the fish I catch with my single-hander or gear rod.
The tongue in cheek part: It's a well-known fact that most spey casters are old guys whose shoulders can't take the rigeurs of single-handed casting anymore, or guys who could never learn to properly cast a single hander in the first place. Darn double handers are the scourge of small high pressure systems like the Vedder.
Their being my friends notwithstanding. :P
