Title: Tidal Fraser River September 13th, 2007
Post by: Rodney on September 13, 2007, 10:25:01 AM
I bet Fish Assassin is still in bed... ;) He was no where to be seen this morning. Actually, I almost stayed in bed when the alarm went off at 5:45am, but the persistence of those snooze settings eventually got me out of there.

Today marks the last outing of my dad's pink salmon hunt. After 10s of hours of trying, he was satisfied with three landed fish and realizing that a lot of work needs to be put in when fishing for pacific salmon species. It may take several hundred casts per day, but those sudden tugs followed by the runs and jumps quickly erase all frustration.

We hit the road at 6:30am. The sun was already creeping up from the dense fog on the horizon. Obi Wan and Ahans were already at the spot when we arrived. They reported two fish landed already. Few were surfacing, it seemed like a productive morning ahead of us.

Vince and his dad pulled up soon after, followed by Pier Boy, then Mykiss, then gman showed up in his work clothes to sneak a few casts in before work. ;D It was turning into an early morning FWR convention. ;D

Ahans was able to connect with three fish, but managed to lose them all! One of the fish was so close to my net. So very close, but he has to wait for another tide change until possibly landing his first one of the season. Speaking of firsts, Vince's dad finally landed his first pink salmon of the year since he started trying in late August. Mykiss netted a fish for his friend, who caught it in pretty shallow water. I lost a rather big fish, which I suspected to be a chum based on its size. Dad unfortunately did not get anymore fish. I guess he just has to settle with the hat trick from earlier this week. A few more were lost by few other people. More fish showed up today, but they just couldn't stick onto the hook.

Good luck to those who are able to get out this afternoon. :)

Casting into the misty river. This morning's coolness is an indication of fall's arrival.

Where abouts were you guys fishing?  I was out this morning about the same time 6am-9am near the 3 rd. pier and saw very few fish and not even a hookup.

Misty River produces many pink salmon every odd year. You can fish creek/river mouths, bars, off of dykes and rocks. Pink spoons will produce well around this time. Time your tides right also if you want to hook fish.

MISTY RIVER = THE FRASER RIVER    ;D ;D

Fished around 3rd Rd pier around 4:00PM to 6:PM  in Richmond. Dead slow even with rising tide. There were about 15 to 20 people fishing and I didn't notice any fish being landed. The evening tide seems to be not doing well.

The FWR Convention was still going strong tonight. The after work shift was out in force.

And no fish from what I heard. Good thing I stayed home. ;D

I agree... I've been heading out after work every day now and every single day it's been dead quiet... I wish I had time to fish before I head into work...  :-\

I think for me personally, I'm going to go early morning on Saturday and try out the morning incoming tide... but after that I'm pretty much done for the season.  Don't see a point since the season is already dying down with no fish to be seen during the evening tide around the richmond to new westminster area.

I think I'm going to have to accept the fact that I won't catch a single pink this season...  :-[... :'(

The evening tides have had a very low range only 4 ft this week. That's probably why the fishing has been slow in the evenings. Next week the range widens and I'd guess that the fish push will be back on

Really? From the charts I'm looking at, the range actually reduces to 1-2 feet next week during the evenings...

Kevgor:
You're probably talking about the week of September 23rd when the range widens a little bit more. Next week is going to be even worse with an average 1.5 ft range.
As gheart said, this season is almost dying down this weekend.... Have to wait another couple of years for pinks to come in... Sigh..... ;)

Don't expect another big bump of pink schools for the rest of this season. If you want consistency on hook-ups, I would head toward the Fraser Valley now while the fish are still fresh and the schools are more compacted at spots. I'm sure that we'll still be able connect with some pink salmon down here, but I don't expect any spectacular days since we would just be intercepting loosely scattered fish. Test fisheries in Juan de Fuca and Johnstone Strait are done, and they indicated that the peak of the run has already gone by a week ago. Since the peak, the daily return has sharply declined.

It has been good while it lasted.

Tell me about it... I've managed to land at least 1 fish every time I've been from the 5th until the 10th, but from Tuesday-Thursday this week I haven't even seen anything landed and almost no fish rising in the Richmond area.

I agree, i've been absolutely skunked all week on the evening tide, and i'm saving up for tomorrow morning, absolutely need to get a fish this year.

Any tips on where to head for this twds the valley?  I've been reading about Crescent Island (and area) b/w maple ridge and mission...anyone fish there?

any tips that don't give away your well-kept secrets are appreciated!!!

Does anyone think just maybe they are late? I dont personally know but from other species coming in later and later it could be that we might just see a bump in the next week or so??? I am just trying to be optimistic.

Definitely not late. In fact, they are early. In the last several seasons, unlike other salmon species, pink salmon in Southern BC have been returning earlier.

From today's Fraser River sockeye and pink salmon updates:

Quote
As a result of higher than expected catches of Fraser River pink salmon in U.S. fisheries over the past several days, at the meeting today, the Panel approved an increase in the in-season run size estimate for Fraser River pink salmon from 10,000,000 fish to 11,000,000 fish, which is considerably below the pre-season 50% probability level forecast of 19,570,000 fish. The 50% arrival timing of Fraser River pink salmon is estimated to be August 23, which is nine days earlier than forecast. This is the third consecutive return year of adult Fraser River pink salmon where their marine migration timing has been considerably earlier than average. Although the current run size estimate of Fraser River pink salmon is far below the pre-season forecast, given the relatively low catches (approximately 443,000 fish), the spawning escapement goal of 6,000,000 fish should be exceeded.

Rodney, your chart is for Area 20 (Juan de Fuca Strait).  I thought the bulk of the Fraser River run came down the east side of Vancouver Island through Johnstone Straight.  If this is the case, is the Area 20 test fishery data indicative of the run timing on the Fraser?

Rodney's right the fishing in the lower is done. We pounded it hard this morning before the high tide, during the high tide, and slack. Only a couple fishing showing here and there every once in a while but its done.

Time to move up river for the remaining fish before they are completely gone.

I herd that peg leg area has a ton of pinks around.
