Georgia Strait off Vancouver water is brown??
« on: May 23, 2011, 10:10:35 AM »

Went out sunday the 22 of May
Left from False Creek, and the water was brown i though it was the rivers at first, until i had to clean it off the lines.

There is a thick brown Algae bloom in the water, It was fouling up the lines and almost made it impossible to reel in line without cleaning the stuff off the rod tips, as it packed up.
Could not find any bait balls on the sounder,

Does anybody no if it is "Brown Tide"  if it is it will harm the fish, it will lodge in the gills and the fish will suffocate..

We fished south bowen and the bell bouy and could not get out of the stuff..

Personally i won't eat any crustations from the ocean until at least 2 weeks after a bloom like the one we are seing is done,
this should provide enough time for most of them to hopefully filter out any toxins like the nasty nerotoxin Domoic Acid,
the effects of this deadly toxin to most creatures are irreversable and has become a real killer lately !
here is a rescent article on Domoic Acid & Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning.
i would think we should at least see some shellfish closures pronto.
