Fishing for Steelies?
« on: November 07, 2005, 09:16:22 PM »

I've never tried fishing for steelheads, but after looking at those great pics under the thread "steelheads", it's getting me pumped to try it.  I'm a fishing nut also and like to join you steelie nuts out in that cold, fresh winter air  ;D  I wasn't sure if i should've continued under that thread, but didn't want to hijack it with some questions about fishing for steelies  ;)

What i'd like to know is what kinda set up do you use and what types of bait/lures are needed?  I know a lot has to do with preference, but i'd like to hear what works best for you.  Also what kinda waters to look for.  Anyone willing to share info will be much appreciated.  Maybe someone will be willing to take me out with them and show me how the pros do it  ;) ;D

I'm still contemplating whether i should get me self a steelie tag...............someone please encourage me  8)

The problem with going with a buddy, is if he tags a hatch early in the day, he's fidgeting waiting for you. :(

That is assuming that your buddies tags one first!!!!! ;D ;D ;D I hit 4 steelies last year by 6:30 am.  2 of them on my first casts of the morning.  All of which were let go, except for the last one of the year, a chrome 12lb doe at the end of march.  I hadn't kept one yet!!!! ;D ;D  In fact I have only ever taken home 2 steelies.  That one and a 9lb hatchery taken barfishing in early july.  I would have let her go as well, but she was bleeding to much for comfort!!! :( :(

It isn't about setting a record, it is about the fish porn man!!!!!  Then I saw all of these replys come back so I got curious and took a look.  At that point, I felt that the steelhead deserved a spot on the top ten, with the sockeye and spring and first nations!!!!! ;D ;D ;D  You know what that does sound a bit wierd doesn't it!!!!!  I guess that it is just another side affect of being a steelheader, can't stand seeing more interest in another salmon species.!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

I've caught them on yarn, rubber worms, spin n'glos, roe, krill, dew worms, bugs, gooey bugs. They'll take just about anything if you presented correctly.

I have had most of my luck in that last few years on coloradoes and coho roe bags.  Short floating, with shorter leaders.  About 18" depending on the water.!!!! ;) ;)

Thanks FA for that bit of info.  i was told that steelies were one of the pickiest fish when it comes to presentation........is it true that they like hitting the smallest piece of bait or lure?

I've caught them on the smallest roe bags and the biggest chunks of roe. Difficult to say.
