I'm new to this board, and to fishing in BC (did course fishing in UK as a kid).

Steelhawk started a good discussion back in October with the subject heading above.  But being new to a lot of these techniques (and fish) its all a bit overwhelming where to start.

If you had to pick two techniques/tackle setups for a newb to fish for Coho on the Cap, what would you pick?

The newb would be using a 6'6" spinning rod, 4-10lb, medium action!

By the way, this is an excellent forum that seems to have a lot of very knowledgable people willing to share that knowledge!

I don't know if a 6'6" spinning setup would exactly be ideal for fishing wool/roe, but I used to slay 'em with a setup just like that using various Blue Fox spinners.  I rarely fish gear anymore but any time I fish gear for coho it's spinners all the way.  I don't even bother float fishing for 'em anymore.

u can chuck jigs, spinners, spoons, and u can float fish with a 6'6

Jazza, your 6'6" spinning rod should be excellent for casting lures for salmon but as someone else pointed out, it is more difficult if you choose to float fish with it due to its length. There would be too much slack line laying on the surface between your float and the rod tip, forming a large belly as the float drifts downstream because the line is drifting faster than the float. It's not impossible, your hook-up rate would just be poorer than using a typical baitcasting or centerpin setup.

For spinning, I have done very well with 1/8oz and 1/4oz Gibbs Crocs. Hammered copper with orange stripe has always been productive for me.

My lure of choice is a spoon (50/50 gold and silver w/ no float)  followed by roe (w/ float).  I fish the spoon slow, with a pull and flutter motion.  If that doesn't work, I'll switch to the roe and go more stealth. Small presentation in back water places that look like they've been missed by the hoards of other people.
