rough day at Lafarge Lake ( ok i am a small timer)
« on: October 01, 2005, 09:05:29 PM »

thanks to the lower mainland lakes' stocking information from Rod, i decided that i would go take a try at the closest lake on the list.  time for some trouts eh!
arrived at lafarge lake in coquitlam at around 6pm, cloudy and a bit chilly, no wind though.  I bottom fished with shrimps.  half an hour into fishing, the line was pulling a bit and so i set the hook, bam! fish on~  it wasn't fighting strong though, or it didn't fight like a trout at all.  when the fish was pulled closed to the shore, i saw something familar...something i've caught a lot back in july at mill lake.. it was a cat fish!  my first cat fish at lafarge lake though. fished there many times and this was the first time i landed a cat fish.. about 8 'in, unhook it gentlely and let it crawls back to the lake.  put another shrimp on and casted to the same direction, just right after the bait sunk to the bottom, something took my bait again, wow that was fast.  i set the hook, fish on babe!  i retrieved it and, darn, it felt like the first fish, not much fight, not acrobatic at all( a 'bow usually would pull left and right ,while catfish often swim toward the angler(retrieving)'s direction.  yes, another catfish, just a little smaller than the first one.  these guys just keep following me no matter where i go eh!! (no j/k, i am sure it's just because of my fishing method).  i fished till 7:20pm, when the visibility was down to almost 0.  caught 7 catfishes all together, ranging from 5 to 10 inches.  released them all... sigh, it got me a bit frustrated in fact, i would try the bait on a float next time, or just fish with powerbait.  i was wondering if the hatchery guys were stocking catfish here instead of 'bow, caused for 8 years, i've never caught a catfish here in this lake.

I've been most successful at Lafarge with light tackle, float and powerbait or worm, about 3 ft under. Cast out to the dropoff, no more, no less. I always C&R there, the water looks very unappealing, especially now post-summer.

cant use worms, shrimp or any bait for trout there  catfish will take it;). live right near there..fish the lake all the time...you have to fly-fish with leeches, bottom fish from shore with powerbait is the best ;)

What you need is the Fraser Valley Hatchery Formula. ;)

I've had great success with deli shrimp, dew worms and small roe sacs.

the hatchery formula from berkley still works well..both that or the paste with one rubber egg with do the trick. use a small hook, and a slip weight. u dont need to cast far, because the fish feed on the drop off. cast and leave it. if u havn tgot any bites for 20 minutes, reel in, swithch to new bait, and cast again. do not use any real or live bait, catfish will eat it all up ;) ;)

Good Luck ;D :D ;),
