Just read the great post on camera choices and that made me post this.  

I just got a digital camera this spring so I'm still a newbie in the digital world.  I've been using the photo editing software that came with it, Nikon Editor but I find it tough to use.  Not very user friendly and it doesn't have many features (did you see my supersize Kokanee pics  ?)

So my question is, is it worth buying another photo editing software, and if so which one should I get?  Stuff that I want to do is resizing, cropping, and doing fun stuff like maybe adding a gong to some of my fish pics (What software was used for the edited photos in Birdnesters 'whats wrong with this pic' post).

The "grandaddy" of photo editing software is Photoshop - a pricey application to purchase.  It's the swiss army knife of photo editing and not for the feint of heart.  That being said, it's what I use when I do my photo work.  

There are copies "available" out on the 'Net too.  

Some basic resizing, etc, and photo album tools are available in a nice local package called ACDSee. Nice "view everything", resize, convert, crop, and some basic editing.

What's your view on piracy? If you are all for it... then every program every created costs the price of a blank cd.

London drugs also has Adobe Photoshop Album as well for 79.99, never used it and not familiar with it so can give no advice here. A copy of Photoshop Elements (editing and enhancement software) and Photoshop Album might be the way to go as well to have the same basic ability as photoshop without the addition graphical power of Photoshop.  I believe you can download trial versions of both on the Adobe site here: http://www.adobe.com/products/pselementsalbum/main.html

"Adobe Elements" is a nice photoshop "lite"

Combined with the basic ACDSee (Deluxe not Powerpack) should give you a good combo for creating many good things.

As Hook pointed out, Irfanview is a nice FREE app, that works quite well - lots of plugins available.

I use Photoshop Elements to edit my pictures and ACDSee as my default photo viewer.  I've found photoshop elements to be a easier to use than the regular version of Photoshop. Lots of  digital cameras come bundled with good editing software.

Thanks, great links and info all.  This is the info I was looking for.  Looks like Photoshop Elements may be worth looking into since I won't be making a living from my photos as a professional.

Anyone ever used MS Digital Image?  My wife can get it at employee discount, but not Adobe products  .   Is it any good?
