Kokanee fishing from shore
« on: June 08, 2010, 12:30:52 PM »

Does anybody know of any place in or near the Lower Mainland where kokanees can be caught from shore?

It would have to be someplace that's on a water body known to contain kokes and has depths of 30 feet or more within casting range from shore or a dock/wharf/pier.

Thanks.

Buntzen Lake and Alouette Lake are the best bets, both contain kokanee. though worms and floats work better then spin casting imo.
best of luck, cheers.

Question then becomes, where can you cast from shore that can reach deep enough waters?  They're found in depths of the 30 foot range.

The best time to fish Alouette is when there is a slight drizzle - the fish are within a few feet of the surface then.

Well, because your so analytical Here's a map.
They have other maps on this site as well and this is only half the map (closest to the parking)
But remember: fish don't read books nor do they use a computer; a full moon, a sunny day, a cloudy day, the traffic on the water throws your researched 30 foot depth out the window.
30' is a mean average with all the variables it's never a sure thing (today it's 30, tomorow it's 20 the next day it's 45).
Like all the info you get here or any other place its just a primer, you gotta get out and do.
Worst comes to worse you don't catch anything but hopefully you enjoy yourself and learn something that will help you in future excursions.

Thanks.

Actually, the 30' theory isn't so much researched as it is advised by guys at tackle shops.

I tried the Gold Creek mouth at Alouette, but my float just laid flat on its side when I set it at such depths and I just wound up hooking a pikeminnow instead.

Good to know there's a deeper, sharper dropoff at Buntzen.

Who told you they were at 30 feet? It really depends on a few things and water temps are a big one. Catching kokanee from shore on Alouette is not going to be an easy task. We use boats on the lake and most of the good fishing have been well over 100 yards away from shore. Dont forget thats a VERY deep lake.

We caught kokanee from shore at jones lake last weekend the lake is really low right now so there is lots of shore access we watched for the risers and once we located them we slayed them wedding bands or worm 2-3 ft under bobber worked for us.

for buntzen lake pick any of the rocky dropoffs or even the dock if its free. i have caught trout and a kokanee from the beach even. but if you have a boat or can borrow one, your chances will improve greatly.

I know kokanees have been caught in the past from Alouette Lake shore (based on Alouette Lake derby results from a thread here which has a tally of fish caught from shore).  Knowing that it will be difficult but not impossible nevertheless, any suggestion on which Alouette Lake shore has the best chance to catch kokanee?

Is the road to Jones passable?

Good question, inquiring minds need to know for this weekend  ;D
