Foul Hook Question
« on: August 25, 2013, 03:03:44 PM »

So today I was beach fishing for pinks doing a slow retrieve using a wobbly spoon and I wound up hooking a pink in the mouth with my line with the spoon just dangling loose on its body.  My guess is he probably spit out the hook but got tangled up with the line in his teeth.  I assumed I foul hooked him so I released him.  So did I interpret the rule correctly?

it happens.....a lot. especially coho in my experience. i've had my line wrapped around its head after you seen the hook in the mouth before it started rolling and thrashing that the hook popped off and hooked another piece of its body or just literally mummy wrapped itself with the hooked popped out dangling outside its mouth.

I have caught a couple pinks before where the lure was jammed in its mouth while the hook flopped around outside its mouth. getting the lure back was harder than pulling a barbed hook out  :o
I have hooked coho like this before too but they usually spit the damn thing just as your tailing them  >:(

anyone else here actually land a salmon that grabbed onto your float and refused to let go ? I landed a red spring like that and have had several steelhead grab it but they always release after a few seconds to a minute or so

Thanks, I did not know that rule.

Last year I was targeting cohos in this frog water using roe sacks.  The float hasn't moved for a while but suddenly it dove, so I started to reel it in.  It felt a bit heavier than a coho jack so I thought I hooked an adult coho.  As I brought it in, one coho jack was hooked in the mouth by the hook but a second jack just seems to just hang there with no hooks. It turned out he swallowed the entire float.  I'm guessing the first one won the race to the roe sack and swallowed it, causing the float to dive and the second one thought the float was a bait fish and swallowed it up.  I doubt this combination will happen to me again.

Weird. Here (http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/points/salmon-saumon-eng.html) it says: "you may not retain any accidentally foul-hooked salmon."

YNOT - I cant seem to find where you got this info. could you please post a link or possibly a photo of it written in the synopsis. Thank you

I would hate for people to treat this as truth only to end up being ticketed for it. If we are going to put info out there its our responsibility to make sure its the correct info  ;)

Gear
• Barbless hooks are required for all salmon and sea-run trout
fishing. Barbless treble hooks are acceptable in most areas,
however barbless single hooks are a requirement in many
tidal areas of coastal rivers as well as areas requiring special
management measures. These areas are described in the
accompanying tables.
• If you are pinching a barbed hook, the barb must be crimped flat.
Partially crimped barbs are not in compliance to this regulation.
• It is illegal to catch and retain or attempt to catch salmon by wilfully
foul hooking. Salmon that are foul hooked accidentally in the ocean
may be retained
. A salmon intentionally or accidentally foul hooked in
any lake or stream including the tidal portions of coastal streams, must
be released immediately to the water from which it was caught with the
least amount of harm
.
• There is no limit to the number of fishing rods a licensed angler may
use in tidal waters, other than the tidal waters of the Fraser River where
the limit is one line per angler.
• It is illegal to angle with a fishing line to which more than one hook,
artificial lure or artificial fly is attached except:
– in the tidal portion of the Fraser River where you can use two hooks,
artificial lures or artificial flies, attached to a bar rig.
– in tidal waters you may use any number of hooks attached to a fishing
line if the hooks are used in combination to hold a single piece of bait
and not arranged in such a fashion to catch more than one fish. This
does not apply in those areas restricted to the use of only one single
barbless hook.

Thank you for the link. here is everything written on Page 14 of the TIDAL regulations book.

I highlighted the part you thought was a spoof Bobo  ;)
