« on: May 22, 2010, 08:40:40 PM »

I have never fly fished greentimbers befor so what I need to know is what patters do they  like and how to fish them (wet or dry). I have bait fished this lake before.

My best producer in this lake is a chironomid. i like to put it 3-4 feet under a strike indicator. Here is the EXACT recipe i use for this fly.

Hook - Tiemco 2499 SP-BL, size 14
Thread - Red 8/0 Uni-Thread
Copper beadhead sized to match hook (sorry cant rememver the exact size)
Body - Black flashabou (I use 2-3 strands and wrap from the bead down to the bend and back up)
Ribbing - Red wire (size XS)

I tie this with a red butt about 1/8th an inch long.

If you ever see me at the lake just come over and i will show you or even give you one of these (if i have enough) and i will be the guy with the Pug names Mikey and probably be catching fish ;) LOL

normally but havent been lately LOL

if you see the older gentleman that sits in his lawn chair go up to him and ask about some flies that work, dont just ask about whats been working that day but more of a general what works normally in the lake. He is there all the time and always gets into a few fish.

the fly i just explained to you can be bought at M&Y. its not exactly the same but basically the same idea and will work just as well. I took my fly from that one and just changed it up a bit to make it work a little better thats all.

I've talked to that fellow the 2 times I've been there and he's always into fish when I'm there.  We sat and watched mayflies get taken off the surface not far off shore.   Only prob I have with the lake is my strip pile gets dirty...  Gonna bring the stripping basket next time.

Another great producer for these stocked trout is a pheasant tail nymph fished with an indicator.  black or copper bead head with red wire.  I even outfished the gentleman in the chair with that one!

thats funny because i normally out fish the guy in the chair with the fly described here  ;) I do sometimes use other flies, but that one fly specifically always gets a few tugs even in the heat of summer and it even catches interior rainbows  ;D ;D

ask him next time you see him, we call my fly "Old Faithful" because of its shattering consistency in that lake. I do have a green pattern that is my other go to but its way more custom and harder to explain it  ;)

what are you using when you catch those little bullhead/catfish though ?? I saw a younger guy last year catching them against the weeds in the summer but he only managed to hook a few cause they are so bloody small.

I caught a few decent sized ones in there last august, around 9 inches or more by fishing worms on the bottom... The majority of em in there are quire small though.
