Decision on new fly Reel
« on: October 21, 2007, 08:10:19 PM »

I have a 7wt Sage that I want to use for steelhead this year. I am deciding on a reel to put on it. Ideally i would put an islander lx on it but a bit too expensive. I have heard Ross and Abel some some nice reels. Any suggestions? I dont want to spend beyond $300 if i dont have to.

Thanks

I just picked up a sage reel and the drag on it is really nice. Price is under $200. I got mine at Hatch Matcher's in Maple Ridge.

Thanks Fly guy I will look into it. What model is it?

Anyone have any experience with the Loop G3 or the Evotec CLWC (the clear one)?

Loops make some nice reels. Personally i own the loop opti runner but the drag on the G3 is the same. amazing drag. If you were interested in one Sea Run Fly and Tackle has a nice selection of loop, abel and etc reels.

For a Steelhead reel and good drag is good to have. The sage value reels are ok for most fishermen, along with the lower line Loops. I'm not crazy about Ross' new line up, I think they've cheaped out on them. The SA system II reels are nice also. If you don't do a ton of hard fighting fish then most reels will work.

If you head out alot and work the drag, then you might want to pony up for a nicer reel. Bauer, Higher end Loop, Abel... Don't forget to check out classifieds, or post what you're looking for. M&Y in Surrey usually has some decent used stuff kicking around, I think they had a Marquis #7, no drag mind you ;D

Edit: if you want to save a few bucks, you could pick up one of these guys... http://www.bcfishingreports.com/forum/index.php?topic=4240.0

i have ross momentums on a couple of my spey rods and they are excellent reels with one of the best drags out there AND are maintenence free. I traded in my abel super 8 as it was too pretty and i scratched it everytime out..boy that thing sure did perform well too though..

My second favorite reel that is in your price range is the lamson, excellent drag, tough tough mothers with the guide coating on um, will handle steelhead and salmon easily and are very reasonably priced...

Has anyone had any issues with putting a bigger reel on a lighter rod? Meaning an 8-9wt reel on a 7wt rod.
