I have heard that the Pinks coming down the west coast this year are BIG, like 7-8 lb.   Can anybody corroborate that report?

I had heard the same thing in regards to sizes of 7-8lb (not confirmed). I guess we will have to wait and see. Campbell river had some of the biggest pinks I had ever seen last year, although I do not know if there is any correlation between the two runs.

The Fraser is about a month away from having the start of the run. Patience.

I think someone has been waxing lyrical/is drenched in hyperbole/FOS.

The ones I've seen For Sale have been midgets as per SOP and in my whole long life I have seen exactly one (1) Pink that was the maybe 7 pounds.

WCVI is already lousy with them and they'll be here soon enough.

There is a massive push coming around the bottom of Vancouver Island.

The San Juan test fishing caught 584 pinks on July 23rd.
There were 85 caught there in on the same date in 2009.

You can see the data on the Pacific Salmon Commission's website: http://www.psc.org/info_testfishing_summaries.htm

Keep in mind that most of the pinks come down the inside - I haven't had time to check the numbers for area 13 (Johnston Strait).

If the fish are in the San Juans then they can be just a few days away.
I may start looking next week.

Thanks everyone.

I have spoken to some Commercial guys who claim that about 1 month ago the Pinks were in abundance between Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlottes. They said it's going to be a good run. Much better than in years past.

I checked my Fishing Journal, and I was catching Pinks in late July in 2007. I didn't fish much for Pinks in 2009 as I had a young child, and my wife was pregnant again. So, ... I'm looking forward to getting my kids into some fish this year.

Cheers,  John

No pinks in the Eve, river north of Sayward. My fishing buddy was in Sayward on Saturday and all that came by were small schools of sockeye with maybe a few pinks mixed in. No fish in the Campbell Quinsam system yet. Most pinks for the Fraser seem to be on the outside of Vancouver Island. Another week and we should be seeing the pinks return to the Campbelll Quinsam. Fraser pinks are big. A guide friend caught a 13lb. pink. Tight lines

Two years ago I was shocked at the small size of the Pinks in the Campbell, 2-3 lb typical.   I recall runs long past (Keogh, Tsolum) where perhaps 5 lb was the norm and 8 lb and larger common.  I have heard the rumours of big fish coming down the west coast this year, I have also spoken to a commercial fisherman who reported catching some of the smallest Pinks he had ever seen, ~ 1 lb.    Time will tell.

I'll be fishing the Pender bluffs this weekend.  2009 was an awesome year for Pinks there.  2011 should easily top it!

Of the 5 pinks I've seen hooked this year, 2 have been very small like 1-2lbs, both does.  And 3 males have been decent size, 4-5lbs.  This is in the salt.  They'll pack on some size when they hit freshwater.
