This is indicative of the lack of respect offered to the sportsfishermen!
Many sportsfishermen stayed home today because they thought it was closed as of the end of August. However there are sportsfishermen out there fishing right now either because they are unaware of the regulations or they are ignoring them. The whole regulation and enforcement with DFO is a joke. Somebody should be fired!!

Hopefully you have sent FOC a note of your concern. I know it can get frustrating when things like this happen but if you get proactive it should help things for the future.

Folks, DFO staff and many of you have received calls about chinook management actions in place today.  This note should clarify the regulations in place right now.

The guide for both the tidal Fraser and the Fraser in Region 2 says:

May 1 - Aug 31, opportunites expected, contact your local DFO office
Sept 1 - Dec 31, 4 per day with only one over 62 cm

The fishery notices we posted earlier in the year dealt only with the May 1 to Aug 31 period thus I didn't think we needed a reminder to folks that effective September 1 we changed the size limit from 50 cm to 62 cm.  Boy was I wrong:(

Anyway, I've looked at the website and I see that when the last fishery notice was posted the period from Sept 1 - Dec 31 was removed. I have contacted our webmaster and she will rectify this situation immediately and I have also drafted a Fishery Notice that will be out this morning.

Please note that there will be a bait ban in place during the Interior Fraser Coho timing window, a fishery notice on this will come out this week too.  The dates are:

mouth to Mission: Sept 8 - Oct 9
Mission to Hope: Sept 10 - Oct 12
Hope to Sawmill Creek: Sept 12 - Oct 15

Sorry for any confusion.

Spoke to Fisheries and Oceans Canada this morning re: chinook salmon. Tidal and Non-tidal Fraser River chinook salmon opening is extended to December 31st, but adult minimum size is moved from 50cm to 62cm.

Aggasiz to Hope remains closed for salmon fishing.

Bait ban will come in effect next Tuesday (September 8th).

Complete detail will be available in a fishery notice later on today.

this is great news!  thanks for keeping us all up to date Rod & Chris - much appreciated!

this notice was specifically related to non-tidal waters of the Fraser river; are there any changes or notices about to be released that affect fishing in the tidal portion of the Fraser - i.e. can we still catch and keep chinook in the lower fraser? and is there a size restriction - must be over 62cm long?

Thanks for the info Rod

This is a great site for info. Is it possible to change the title of this post to "Chinook salmon retention IS NO LONGER closed starting on September 1st."

If you just scan the topics in general discussion without opening it, you might think retention is now closed. Just a thought.
