kayak fishing
« on: November 20, 2004, 06:46:23 PM »

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried fishing with a kayak. I went out once to Belcarra with a tandem kayak crabbing & tried jigging. Caught no fish but trapped a few crabs. When I went back for my last retrive someone took my trap.

I've bottom fished in the Gulf islands (Mayne island), jigging buzz bombs off the bottom. It's fun when you get into a good sized lingcod. You just need to get it off the bottom before it starts dragging you...but that only realy happens with some of the bigger fish. It's a lot of fun though, get a few boats out there and all work together getting fish into boats.

I used to pull traps from a kayak, it was fun for a period of time, but got a little tiring for the reward of a single crab.

Yes I'm interested in Kayak fishing.

I'm going to do it in here in Japan next year and am looking at this kayak.

This feathercraft kayak is great because everything folds down and you can essentially take it everywhere you go.

If you add some cool features to your raft you can have a great time and you could certailnly cover alot of ground.

Here are some crazy anglers from Texas that I talk to quite a bit and they seem to have it down real good. If they can kayak in the gulf of mexico then I'm sure Van would be no problem!  ;)

I usually use photobucket for photo storage and came across this guys Kayak fully sooped up. He's even got a sail that he can use if the winds are good. I love how the cooler is on the back all tied up.

Basically kayaking is a good way to get into some holes or spots and you don't have to worry about gas or matience. Besides too it's good exercise!

That last one is a pretty sweet looking machine.

And they seem to take it really serious in Texas, but I guess it is pretty practical, just need to rig up a small engine to get you to further locationc, and then paddle not to spook the fish. Any ideas ?

Spud I don't think you're going to spook any fish on a kayak especially on a kayak.

What engine would you need? Just your arms will do and your physical self to motor yourself around. ;)

Yes the hobie kayak is a cool machine. This texas guy seems to have it all. Would love to hear how he makes out with such a set up.

If anyone wants to know more of this kayak check this out

I meant that to get to a "long-range" location, use a small kicker to get you there, then cut the engine just bofre you get there, and paddle in the rest of the way. The kayak won't spook fish, but the engine might.

You gotta be nuts to go after Halibut in that !!!  :o

We always joked about taking a float tube or pontoon boat with you when salmon fishing in the chuck, hook into a good sized spring, then jump out in the tube and fight it from there, you'd get towed around quite a bit, but it would be a laugh trying to land the fish.

if you can get sharks in a kayak why not salmon then?

That would be a hoot on a kayak being pulled by that.

one of the most interesting things I saw this fall had to be a guy catching sturgeon after sturgeon in a little inflatable boat. I cant imagine using a inflatable out on the fraser, let alone trying not to tip the boat over while unhooking a sturgeon. And when i say inflatable I'm not talking a zodiac. I'm talking about those pump up plastic boats kids use on a lake.

Once with my son I caught a shark in an inflatable in Birch Bay Washington. I shook it off my hook and it swam towards my inflatable real hard and punctured it. Fortunately the inner tube kept us afloat enough for us to peddle back to shore.

Was it panicking or angry ?

Mud Shark? I would imagine it was panicking.  Usually when I've caught a mudshark they are pretty docile.
