You are allowed to fish the tidal fraser right now but not with the intention of catching salmon. There are often cutthroats and whitefish in the fraser this time of the year as the fry start making their way towards the ocean. Give it a try, just use lighter gear. That way it's more fun catching cutties and if you hook into a spring it will easily snap your leader. heres the link for the regs and the salmon updates as well.

In the Tidal Fraser around the new West area, you are more likely to encounter only cutthroat trout, bull trout and a variety of coarse fish species (northern pikeminnow and peamouth chub) than mountain whitefish. Mountain whitefish are more confined to the freshwater so their range doesn't extend out to the estuaries.

The water clarity is poor right now so bait fishing would be the best way to go. All bull trout and wild cutthroat trout (presence of the adipose fin) are required to be released.

For bull trout and cutthroat trout, you can try fishing with roe. Keep in mind that this is primarily a catch and release fishery, so when we do it we always try to do our best not to end up with a fish that is hooked too deeply, eg. set the hook earlier rather than later, using bigger hooks (size 1, 1/0).

For coarse fish, dew worm, dough balls, etc work well.

One other species that you can catch and release is white sturgeon.

Bottom fish for all these species, use enough weight so the bait can be anchored at one spot even if the tide is flowing.

Maybe it was Sturgeon as they do like to jump and yes you can fish for them 12 months of the year.
Remember though they are strictly a catch and release species.

Goodluck! I've had some stellar days in the tidal fraser but this time of the year they aren't very common.

Try Sapperton landing, just East of Mcbride on Columbia.

Might be hard to land and  release a fish @ the quay.

I see people Sturgeon fishing @ Sapperton and watched Dollies and Cutties chase fry around when the water was clearer.

There are 2 bridges that go over a little slough.  People tend to Sturgeon fish in front of the bridges in the deep flow and when the tide comes up the trout are in the shallows under the bridges.
