Sea Lice
« on: September 11, 2009, 01:50:49 PM »

Does your pink catches so far indicate the amount of sea lice is similar to past years?

Seems like more to me but maybe it's because I fished further up river years past and this year it's been exclusively in Richmond so they have not started to fall off yet.

The ocean caught ones Im getting on the island right now have an average of 5 per fish.
Most of them are located close to the anal fin and the gills.

There were many (5-8) on the ones I caught in Richmond and in New West.

Q. have you guys seen the long white string type thing that goes from the spot the lice is attached through the meat to the inside of the fish?
Q. Is that a bad thing?  do the lice leave eggs inside the fish's meat? ???

I would say sea lice on Pinks are pretty normal occurence, they bring no harm to a adult fish entering fresh water to spawn.

SpringMaster sea lice have been on salmon longer than people have been fishing for them.  5-8 louse on a fish is nothing abnormal.  I got a pink last week though with three 8 inch lamprey's on its side.  Needless to say that one went back :)
