Salmon landing nets
« on: September 18, 2023, 08:56:33 PM »

 Hey Folks
I thought there was a thread about this a few years ago but couldnt find it
I am in the market for a new  salmon net
One  to take to the river and pack in , possibly telescopic and maybe collapsible
Dont generally fish for springs , just coho
Looking for some advice on sizing
Thankyou

I use a Frabill folding net. It’s foldable, telescopic, compact, and pretty cheap. Decent size too - I’ve netted chum in it but I mostly have it for coho. If local tackle stores don’t have it try Canadian Tire

If you want to pay the $ for a "nice net" get a Moby steelheader. When I'm coho fishing I keep it against my back held in place by my wading belt. If I catch a coho I can net it myself. I have the mesh bag on it as I bought it used like this. My preference would be the rubber bag as I find hooks and teeth don't get caught up in it.

If you fish with a buddy who can net your fish then it's nice to have a longer handled telescopic net. I have an aluminum one with rubber basket from Cabelas that I bring out from time to time.

If I hook a big spring or chum I dont net it with my Moby, just going to trash the net.

Whatever you buy please get a proper rubber or soft mesh bag on it for catch and release. The deep old school nets made of string or whatever it is are not cool if you are releasing a wild fish or anything you dont plan to keep. Also worth mentioning you can get cheaper knockoffs of Moby style nets on Amazon, Cabelas, etc

I have a Moby net , mine might be a knockoff but its a wooden frame with a soft mesh net , smaller size
It works well for flyfishing and needed a larger one for landing Pinks and Coho
Wanted a collapsible one , that was telescoping but also foldable because river fishing , you are often hiking .

I settled on a Lucky strike net , it has a removeable and telescoping  handle
It has the rubberized net you mentioned but that also makes it heavier
Its a medium sized one , purchased at Canadian tire
They didnt have the Frabill , saw that one on Amazon but didnt want to wait for 2 weeks , want to go fishing asap
Will try it out next week
Thanks for the replies

Lucky Strike nets are heavy. I prefer ones with aluminum handle
