« on: July 26, 2007, 11:21:55 PM »

Hi everyone..after a recent trip to our wonderful Aquarium, I took an interest in the Pacific Cod, and Tomcod...wondering if these are catchable from shore anywhere around, and if so, how? where? fun?

what about sabelfish? Haddock?

Years ago, there were lots of people catching Tom cod at No3 road pier.  It was like elbows to elbows there.  Although not as bad, people were catching them at Ambleside pier too.  And then they disappeared.  Up until last month, I saw a couple people catching the odd one (small about 6") at Ambleside pier.  I was surprised to see them again.  And last week, I saw another fellow caught 1.

The bait of choice was shrimp.

We have caught tons of pacific cod out at swiftsure bank in port renfrew way off shore.  I wouldn't think you could get them close in.  Tom cod use to come in the lower fraser but they have stopped coming.  I tried for them several years ago but i guess they are gone. I beleive september, october was the peak times for them.
