trout growth rate
« on: February 08, 2009, 08:58:11 AM »

hey just wondering if anybody has some info on the growth rate of trout, a lake that i often hit each summer has an average trout size of two pounds, i know it was stocked with fry in mid october and i am curious as to how big these new arrivals might be by july. Any info is greatly appreciated, Quincy.

It really depends. Every lake would be different. It depends on the abundance of food, and how many fish are in the lake ( as they have to compete for food ) You see there are some lakes that have tons of food and the fish get big quickly, than there are lakes with average amount of food but lots of fish so they dont grow very big.

the lake im speaking of is little more then a pond so in relation the fish are big, they are all in prime condition and their flesh is crimson red so i think there is a huge amount of feed in the lake, well looks like ive got some work to do studying the fish size next time i go  ;D, thanks for the info

Growth of trout in lakes depends on their strain, biotic and abiotic factors in their ecosystem (food source, competitive species, etc). Some generic information can be found at:

http://www.gofishbc.com/specstrains.htm

At the bottom of that page, there are two PDF files that contain more specific information. Those documents do not specifically discuss the growth rate (beyond year 1 and 2 anyway). For more specific information, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC will have a big information booth at the [urlhttp://www.squarefeetevents.ca]Fraser Valley Boat and Sportsmen's Show[/url] as usual, so you can gather more information by asking the fish culturists and biologists then.

For some of the lakes where they are clipping, you might be able to tell exactly how old the fish are by how they were clipped: http://www.gofishbc.com/r3.htm.  In Roche lake for example you can tell the year and strain of trout from the type of clip it has. (Brian Chan was doing this on a WFN flyfishing show at Roche).  For more detailed info though you have to use the fish wizard, but from it you can get detail like this:
Date Species Strain Genotype Stage Released Grams Mark
