Stave River, October 10th 2012
« on: October 11, 2012, 09:56:30 PM »

Got to the west side of the river just before daylight.  First hour or so very slow using a few different wools and a couple of spinners,  Change to a black and orange jig and next 10 casts 3 fish to shore and lost one.  Fish were quite black and males so released in the water by the shore.  Hooked into a few more and left about 10:30.

I could not believe some of the fish being kept.   The only good use for them would be fertilizer.   Probably spawned out if female.  Would rather take my chances with hamburger these days.

You'll see all kinds of nasty chum being taken home.

I still have a pic of a happy young guy holding up a chum saying "yes, I know it is peeing on me".
Well, I have news for you - it ain't peeing.

Hopefully this will relieve some of the pressure off the Vedder now that people can go and catch their nasty chums closer to the big cities.

I can't decide on which river to fish this Sunday. The Stave or Chehalis... the later of the two I have never fished. The Stave I am familiar with but it hasn't been producing many fresh fish (compared to my previous years experiences).

Stave is such a show, some of the antics make me shake my head. Always good to stay away from the crowds.

I've seen people keep some nasty looking chum in the Stave in past years so I asked them what the hell they do with them, they told me they feed them to their dog. I know my cat would never eat those chum but maybe dogs aren't so fussy.

I've heard of a few being caught in the chehalis, and lots at the mouth. I was hoping for a bump in water level to bring fresh fish up.

Chehalis runs clear even during high water. There will def be a push of fish coming in with this rain.

I'd hit the Stave, loads of fresh fish will be coming in with this rain.  Short float jigs and hang on.  Chehalis I'd wait on unless you boat to the mouth.

Old Blue, in terms of a boat at the mouth of the Chehalis, what type of fishing would you suggest (as I have a boat and am considering the trip).
