Stamp River Steel early December
« on: December 11, 2006, 05:04:57 PM »

Well, NOT posting to be a hero, NOT posting to "overhype" steelheading,  and DEFINATELY not posting to invite the armchair internet fishermen out there to criticize everything I do different from them that they feel is wrong.  but-  ( am I a little defensive or WHAT??  ::)  )
I AM posting to share a couple of cool pics ( some maybe a little too artsy, but whatever ) of some really cool fish we all seem to love alot on this site that I was lucky enough to catch last week on the Stamp in Port Alberni. I always enjoy seeing pics of other peoples fishing success and it seems the majority of us do as well so here goes-
We all seem to be itching to hit the Vedder for the early steel at this time of year but the island is always a nice warm up to the season for me and sometimes you can be in luck if your timing is on. There were quite a few fish around and conditions were great. As of last tues, wed, thurs, the temp was hovering around 4' C  and it wasn't raining so the water conditions were perfect. Vis was great, really clear but greening up with the snow runoff as the week went on.  A buddy and I fished one day with Murphy's ( always worth the coin ) and 2 days on our own walking the banks.  We used nat roe, roe bags, peach/pink wool and blades. All caught fish for us, some more than others in various runs. About 50% of our fish were summers, some only slightly rosey, a couple were real tomatoes, but the size of some of the summers ( up to 12-14lbs ) made up for their for their lack of flash. A few of the winters were absolute mirrors, so some fresh fish were definitely coming in during the week as we fished. Also, we caught a quite a few smaller fish, not sure if they were just big smolts that were too dumb to head out to the ocean, or some really steelie looking residents, but we made sure they were all sent back on their way. The closeup shot of the fish head posted below was one of the bigger little guys. Would you believe we also caught a buck sockeye kelt?? I thought it must of been flossed until I got it in and had to operate to get my roe bag out of its throat. Made me long for the summer days on the Fraser with a 20' leader and a 3oz bettie- NOT! ::)
A great week, here a few pics-

Above is my favorite color

thanks for the photo idea Nicole

 :P :P :P

I want to go there...

I was hoping to go there this winter with one of my friend from France... but believe it or not, he does not seem that excited by a fishing trip in BC... A shame ::)

I will definitively do a trip to the island (or to the queen charlottes, depending on my budget) next winter. And if I find nobody to come with me, I will go alone ;D

Keep the pics coming
