Splitting wedges
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:49:43 PM »

Hey all, I'm looking for a new splitting wedge for chopping rounds of wood.
Not the type of wedge you drive with a big mallet but the type you swing like an axe.
I'm striking out here.. If anyone can send me in the right direction or if you've got one laying around maybe we can work something out.
Looking for minimum 5lbs preferably a little heavier.
Thanks for the help.

Check Princess Auto, it doesn‘t look like the type I have with 2 pivoting dogs that push the wood apart is around anymore, but they do a nice one w/ fibreglass handle for around $35.  If it‘s big tough wood you may need a sledge for the odd coupe de grace.

The old splitting wedges were a stand alone metal wedge that you could use the back of an ax or sludge hammer to split wood. I think they just faded away into history.

We used them to free stuck axes too. :)

I highly recommend a six pound splitting maul . Lordco has them . Or if  your not a guy that's into manual labor.Try home depot or a rental yard for a gas powerd hydraulic splitter. A little more than a maul. But will save you six trips to the chiropractors. :)

28" is pretty short for a maul?
Anyways picked up a 6lb. Splitting maul today from rona, just not sure about the quality of the steel but i picked up a 38" hickory handle for it as well.

I picked up a fisker splitting axe X27 is the model. Just over a 4lb head 36" long that thing is bada$$ for splitting rounds!
