Snag and release
« on: October 15, 2007, 11:21:44 AM »

I've been up to the Vedder a few times this year with Sunday being the last time.

I've read  about short floating on this forum and had some success with it but the last three visits I've been skunked....for salmon anyway released a couple cutthroat.

Didn't feel too bad because each time I've hit two or three pools and found similar results for everyone else fishing....everyone except the snaggers, draggers.

Yesterday I watched three guys from a distance casting a rods length from shore in fast water and snapping back like they're fishing a dry fly. They snagged a coho and didn't even need to play it as it landed on shore with the force of the retrieve. They all had they're picture taken with it and they released it, must have been wild I guess and they're conscience would not allow them to to break two rules in one day.  >:(

From my perspective according to how short floating is described in this forum 10% of the people fishing the vedder are doing it....maybe less.

I have seen a variation which I wouldn't call snagging..per say.

I've seen a few guys load up on roe and set they're floats about 8ft above the weight. Then they cast into fast water and stand almost directly upstream and gradually move they're presentation a couple feet towards them...wait...move it a couple more feet..and so on. I've seen these guys catch fish where no one else could and they were always hooked in the mouth and usually deep...Any thoughts on this method?

BTW...If you report an incident like what I saw is there a chance FO would show up, even if they did it would be your word against theirs. Would the FO have to watch from a distance and catch them in the act?

Great info on this forum by the way, it's kind of been like porn for me...everyone else is getting some. :o

No comments for the type of fishing described, not the snagging but the other method.

You forgot the other way of snagging them with a fly rod.
