Fawn Lake
« on: May 09, 2007, 07:24:09 PM »

I'm going up to Fawn Lake for the May long weekend with my school fly club. Does anybody have any tips or suggestions on flies to use/how to use them, or any thing that might help. Any input would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!  ;D

I've fished Fawn many times and love the lake! There are some very big fish in there. I have had the best luck trolling a black or olive leach along the north side of the lake. The bay near the resort is a great spot to cast as well. The guys at the resort will be able to give you the best advice as to what is working right now. http://www.fawnlakeresort.com/

Have a GREAT trip!

chironomids definately work great up there, if you have a sounder there are actually three depressions on the resort side of the lake that always do well. Or you can fish scuds just off the drop-offs, I like to bounce them off the weed tops. Right in front of the resort watch the water, big guys cruise in 3-5ft of water. I've done over a dozen fish in an hour or so on that lake and love it. Although you can fish the small channel at the end of the lake, I don't find it necessary to go that far, unless sight seeing  ;D over 4lbs is easily possible, so be ready to get the rods yanked if not secured in the boat or hand well. I almost lost one 2 years back there  ;)

Oh and scuds are anywhere from size 10 to 14, I like to tie pregnant patterns and even some with ice mist blue dubbing.

I have tried both but trolling has been most successful for me. I also use a sinking line and depending on the water clarity I use a 10-14' leader.

Good luck!....and post a report when you get back!
