Lafarge Lake, April 10th 2009
« on: April 10, 2009, 09:51:47 PM »

Was out at Lafarge this afternoon, trying to get some trouts for dinner.  ;)

It is nice to live in Port Coquitlam & be close to this popular stocked lake. It is a nice change of pace from the long steelhead trips to the Valley. Not much action to the shore guys fishing with power bait. Strange, because the tube guys are all doing well. Decide to fish exclusively with small spinners. I was looking for close shore swirls and surface rings. Had three hook ups in an hour and took two nice trouts home for a nice trout dinner.  :D

I must say I was really concerned with some shore fly fishermen. During back cast, their lines and flies crossed right into the walkway where many people including children walked or ran by. Sometimes, these fly guys didn't even look back before they casted. It is a time bomb ready to explode any moment. Some eye balls or ears of some innocent park users are going to be victims of friendly fires any given day. Fisheries authority should do something to stop this potential hazard there. Guys wishing to take the trout with fly lines should be in a boat or a tube, or at least wade out further enough to make sure their back casts don't hit the walkway.

I went early morning on the 10th as well on the tube.  Was a weird day for me.  Hooked into more than a dozen fish, but lost like 7 of them.  I've never had so many come off the hook like that before in a single day.

Also had a dozen or more nibbles.  The fish were starting to get hungry, but not hungry enough to go all out for the fly.

They have been like that for a while now
some fish just take it first time some hit, hit and hit again but only lightly
I was out today and hooked into quite a few
lost a few and had many small tugs
I got one of the broodies (yes i let it go) thanks to OGrady for landing it for me ,too big for my net
wind got up quite strong so it was hard work casting and trolling

Since I"m not a fly fisherman , is there any way to fish with a fly from shore ? I generally fish either with spinners or power bait .

if you want to fish a fly from shore but you dont fly fish you can use a float set up on a gear rod. Its very important to go light with your gear though especialy the float. The fish will bite very diffrently then they do with powerbait.

Yes with light spinning gear you can have lots of fun
just use a bobber and instead of bait tie on a small black leech\small wolley bugger or a chironomid
If the lake has a slight chop to it you won't need to do much except watch your bobber at all times (you will get small hits)
If the lake is calm just give your bobber a tug now and then or a slow retrieve
It will be best to use a light leader (4lb or 3lb) and clear
set the bobber around 4-5ft from the hook

With this float setup using a fly instead of bait are you still using a weight to cast out and how much ? What part of Lafarge would you recamend to try this ? May try this after dinner tonight .

Sure you can use lead shot just keep it as far away from your hook as possible
best thing to use is a float that you fill with water then you dont need any weight
If the bobber is too big the fish can spit the hook when it tries to pull the float down
The fish are all around the lake and you dont need to cast out too far
I see many fishermen\women casting there gear into the middle of the lake and catch nothing
yet some cast close to shore and hook lots
I was there last week in my tube casting to within 6ft of the dock hooking lots of fish and the guys on the dock were casting beyond me and hooking nothing
Many fish hang around the shallows and drop offs
good luck out there
