The Steveston Bullhead Derby is back once again in 2009! Hosted by the Richmond Golden Rods & Reels Society, t his popular grassroot event, is part of the annual Steveston Salmon Festival. The derby takes place at Garry Point Park, which is located at the southwestern corner of Richmond.
This year's derby will be on June 21st, from 10:00am to Noon. Registration starts at 9:00am at the park, so please arrive early with plenty of time to set up your fishing gear. The derby is opened to participants who are 12 or under and 65 or older.
Participants will be provided with a bucket, where they can put their fish in. When a fish is caught, it is brought to the derby tent, where the fish is measured then released safely.

Prizes will be available for different categories. The lucky anglers with the largest bullhead will be rewarded with a trophy, as well as some new fishing gear!
Bullhead is the common name of the fish species pacific staghorn sculpin. It was nicknamed for the unusually large size of its head. Bullhead have spines behind their head, so be sure to handle them with care when removing them from your hook. There are dozens of other fish species that anglers may encounter during the derby. Other species that you may encounter include northern pikeminnow, peamouth chub, bull trout and cutthroat trout.
