Upper Cheakamus River Reopens
Posted on July 31st, 2006 by Rodney Hsu, Webmaster
Please be advised that the Cheakamus River upstream of the lower falls to the dam at Daisy Lake will re-open to recreational angling effective August 1, 2006.
As you are aware, this portion of the Cheakamus River was closed to fishing in August of 2005 as a short-term measure to ensure conservation of resident trout and char stocks impacted by a toxic chemical (caustic soda) spill.
Recent impact and recovery studies in this portion of the Cheakamus River have indicated that a return to catch-and-release angling should not hinder recovery of resident fish stocks upstream of the lower falls (i.e. within the non-anadromous reach).
Official word regarding this opening has been posted on the Ministry of Environment web site.
