Kosher & non-Kosher Fish?
« on: September 24, 2004, 01:38:45 AM »

This may seem a strange question, but...

I forgot to mention at the Vedder Sep.22 Fishing Report, that besides a jack coho, I’d also caught a sculpin.  ::)0   They live just about everywhere, don't they?!!! :o

Long time ago my jewish friend told me, that sculpin is a biblically Clean Fish.
I found a list of clean fishes, but couldn’t find why they are.

http://www.geocities.com/sabbath_7th_day/clean.html

And thus my question; what constitute clean fishes as oppose to unclean fishes?
I am confused, because my understanding was, when you drain blood from an animal, they are kosher.  ???

Thanx in advance.

This year, i had 2 buddies guilded a group of Jewish guest.  They only fish for salmon and nothing else. We asked them why, they said, "all bottom fish, ie halibut, rockcod, lingcod... are garbage feeder, they are unclean and its not kosher."

religion is only good for confusing things. eat whatever you want. when I die there is no way an omnipotent being will say, you're a great guy but you ate a shrimp - to hell with you.

that sounds like a man's law masquerading as divine.

More for the rest of us ! Do they eat pork ? Muslims consider pigs as being dirty animals.

kosher depends on how strictly, a jewish person practices his faith.  orthodox jews are the most vigilant.

the true definition of NOT kosher (in regards to fish) is fish that are considered to be scavengers, but more accurately, fish that have no scales.

i'm not jewish, but according to a group of jewish people at work, their rabbi says the fish listed above are considered KOSHER because they have scales and they are known to take live prey.

in isreal,  they raise pigs that never touch the ground/earth.  they are born on wooden pallets and live their lives on them. they are strictly monitored by rabbis and are slaughtered by them.  they're called 'white beef'.

It's been a long time since I've done any reading or study of the Bible but the Mosaic laws are alll laid out in the old testament.  To be clean, fish must have both fins and scales.  This allows a lot of scavengers and bottom feeders.  I know a lot of Jewish people that eat carp and there isn't a much greater scavenger than a lake trout in the spring after the smelt run.  Pike have a feast on dead smelt then too.  Beasts of the field must be cloven footed and chew the cud.  This would exclude pork regardless of how it's raised since they are not cud chewers. Fowl must not be web footed.  This is what I remember from many years ago before I dismissed religion as just another control thing.

Out of interest, non-scaled fish, are as bad as homosexuality according to (I belive Leviticus)  So, think of THAT the next time you're eating shrimp  :o

no scales = bad.

However, not everyone still follows these rules so strictly.
