Pretty sad site
« on: June 16, 2025, 02:23:23 PM »

A while ago someone had posted how dead this site is now which is too bad as it used be very busy with lots of info. Now its almost dead, seems like most of the posters have moved on except for the one "know it all". I know I haven't participated much the past few years but age and time have caught up to me and there isn't much time left so time to get the fly rod out and have one shot at the approaching pink season up here on the Sunshine Coast.

I mean I understand why. In steelhead season nobody says a word as they keep their secrets to themselves, understandably so. Nobody wants to post about their reports because a week later there will be tons of people at that lake/river or whatever. There is too many information freeloaders, and almost every topic has been debated to death. There is not really much new stuff going on. Fishing seasons repeat yearly in a similar fashion. Sometimes an event like the Chilcotin slide will happen which is worth discussing. Other than events like that. Any other discussions end up debating politics and nothing ever gets done there. Or some new user will pose a question already answered in a past thread but are too lazy to search through. That's my view.

I've found that most people on here (and in Canada in general) seem to be gatekeepers when it comes to specific knowledge/spots/etc.

That scares/pisses off all the new ones. All that's left are mostly the old guys who don't need tips - hence the low activity and degeneration into politics.

The fishing forums have had their day. They are dead. People have moved on to the social media fishing pages.

TBH, the facebook and insta have also died when they get to big.

I stopped posting all the DFO stuff, people either shoot the messenger or don't believe it or just get mad

I think the main thing on here tho is that new membership is blocked or locked behind rods approval.

Anyone who thinks this site is 'sad' or dying out you should post something topical. Others can respond if they aren't inclined to open a topic. Be open minded about what others write.

I don't understand, you complain that nobody is active on the forum but insult the only active person. ??? You didn't even comment on any of the 4 other replies. If you want to insult Ralph so bad why don't you just private message him.

Astute observation, Darko!

Generally I find that those that complain about a website's inactivity are the same individual's that do little to contribute to its activity.

I know it sounds cliche, but take responsibility to create the site you want.

Pretty sad post.

Officially new but I am a long time "lurker". As a young 20-something man whose family isn't outdoorsy, I enjoyed fishing with my grandfather for only a short time. Since he passed I always had that urge to get out there but had a lot to learn. Google led me to forums like fishingwithrod and sportfishingbc where i started reading and searching, and boy did I find. These sites are gold mines that taught me the basics of salmon fishing and with some dirty boots and patience i found success. This site taught me nearly everything I know about fishing - laws, etiquette, seasons, techniques, and yes even places. Fishing was the gateway to 4x4s and hunting for me. Today I pass this love onto my younger family members and one day my own kids.

So thank you. Thank you to all of you who make this forum an enjoyable place to read about fishing. Even if I don't agree with every post or political opinion I appreciate them. These threads still get thousands of views and some of the know-it-alls have forgotten more than the lazy know-nothing "noobs" here who refuse to search, read, or try will ever know. The same type that fill entire fb groups only to contribute nothing of value and whine that no one gives up the honey holes they spent lifetimes bushwacking to find. Specifically thank you to Mr. Gadsden, Clarki, IronNog, Ralph, Wildman, Everyday, and many others. Gadsden for ensuring my kids will catch fish, Clarki tells incredible fishing report stories, no one smokes like the nog, Ralph for my first fly patterns, wildmans scientific posts, everydays island adventures and spoon techniques, and rods videos back when he respectfully posted them after the season. Even a classic ralph vs clarki debate is valuable to me. Some of you could fill novels full of stories like modern Haig-Browns. I owe each of you numerous tanks of gas spent fishing and hunting in this land of milk and honey that we call home. Please do PM me to collect, I usually am solo. Thank you again gentlemen. God bless you all.
