Salmon fishing not in the Chilliwack River
« on: November 19, 2022, 08:30:27 AM »

Well after a 4 week layoff due to back spasms I was able to get out for a brief period yesterday. I had some personal business to attend to and realized it would put me close to one of my favorite little streams. Mostly it times late September into October but I decided to try and luck was with me as I hooked 4 coho in about 2 hours and landed two. No giants & not hatchery fish but I hooked all 4 on a new fly I tied up within the last few weeks and what positive takes they were!

Photographic evidence

I guess the season is not over until it's over!

Nice. Thanks for sharing.
Vedder is seeing some fresh late run cohos also. Mostly wild fish with sea lice still dripping. I cannot recall the last time I fished for cohos in mid November down at the canal.
A fly-fishers dream.

Would you share the recipe of that new fly with your fellow fly angler? Thanks..

yes of course.

It's basically a flash fly

Hook: #6 Daiichi 2451 (a short shank salmon hook with a straight eye)
cone: small copper
body: a few turns medium Florescent chartreuse palmer chenille
wing/flash: 8 to 10 strands of copper flashabou (see notes)

I'll try to add a photo in future.

notes:

you could sub a similar hook such as a good quality saltwater hook
The body is quite short. Most of the hook shank is bare.
Palmer chenille is a Wapsi product which isn't too plentiful locally. Subs could include Hareline Polar chenille or a medium sparkle chenille
For the wing/flash I use full lengths of flashabou. Tie tips in over the hook bend a bit and spread out over the top before tying in. Divide the back strands in half and pull these back on either side before tying in. Then trim to match the first bunch. The wing should be open and not a compact bundle.

colors combinations can be varied. The chartreuse and copper was intended for more colored water. I have tied a blue and silver version but not fished it.

And this is why fly shops need to carry liability insurance! :)

LOL! Also why our cat isn't allowed in my fly tying room.
