went and fished the mouth of the cap today, no action on spinners. how do you guys normally fish for cap coho? drift a float? bottom fish? or lures? the current was pretty strong..

You need waders to fish the mouth of the cap, if you want to reach the fish.  Rod has an article on it, but what you do is go during very low tide, walk on the tiny islands that are exposed only then. When you get there, you will notice you are south east of where the native fish from east shore.  I'm sure you'll see tons of people their already during peak season.

When i fish at the mouth of the cap, i strictly use spinner or spoon.  Float fishing at the canyon area . Fly fishing at the later month.

So what you are showing us is that the land between Marine Drive bridge and CPR bridge is native land.  :)
I even asked a CO once and he also confirmed that I can't fish there (without permission) as it was First Nations land.

Went up to the canyon today in search of coho.
Was using a 6lb leader and on my second cast my float went under. I set the hook and I thought it was snagged cuz it didn't give and it felt like a rock until I saw the flash. It was huge.
My 6lb fluoro didn't stand a chance and he broke off. I quickly switched to a 12lb leader and it didnt take long for my float to dip again. I never got to see that hog again but managed to land 3 fish.

I thought there was going to be some peace and quiet this year for the first little bit. By the way, you probably hooked a steelhead, they are in the river spawning at this time, please release all steelhead, both winter run's and the super chrome summer steelhead that enter the river prior and with the coho. Identify the fish properly prior to wacking it on the head. No steelhead can be retained both hatchery and wild fish are to be released. Please don't target spawning steelhead in the tailouts of pools, they are very obvious to see, leave them to spawn.

The first wave of coho are always 2lbs or less.  Definately a Steelhead, please learn how to identify all of the salmon species before you decide to fish the Cap.  Just because it has a clipped adapose fin doesn't mean you can bonk it.  Every year this happens, over anxious, excited fisherman see a clipped fin and BONK..

Was there last week, and the only thing I spotted were 2 steelies.
While going back I met a guy who just came down the river by kayak and he didn't see any coho either.

The only thing that bit that day was the girlfriend  :-\
