NFR - Some photos from my Stein Valley hike
« on: September 06, 2008, 04:35:43 PM »

I have a few photos from my Stein Valley hike posted at my blog:

http://dragonspeed.wordpress.com/2008/09/02/stein-valley-photos-alpine/

Quick summary:

9 days hiking - 100km
6 youth
2 adults
Altitude from 7000 feet to 700 feet.

1 helicopter ride
4 days of alpine hiking
4 days of mixed pine/cottonwood/cedar hiking
1 day of desert hiking

Some sun.
Fog so thick you wonder if there's a world out there
Wind so strong a 230lb man has to lean into it
Raindrops so big they could drown you in a drop
Hail/sleet/snow and thunder tossed in for good measure.

Unfortunately on day 2 when the last 4 elements listed combined my camera and lens got SOAKED.  So - no pictures from me after that :(

Hell of a good time....

Nice photo's.  It looks like they had fun walking on the glacier.  It's too bad your camera got wet.

We had one that was VERY unsure of his feet in the snow but the rest did well.

The weather made this hike probably the hardest hike I have ever done.  At the time the camera was not as much a concern as how to get 6 kids through the conditions safely!

In the lower valley, at Cottonwood creek,  a small fish (likely a trout) raised to a cracker crumb tossed in.  If I had time and a few flies, I'm sure I could have taken SOMETHING out :)

Yes.  These pictures are from the alpine area just to the WEST of the headwaters that flow into Stein Lake, which of course, flows into the Stein River.  We are on the WEST side of the Stein Divide in these pictures.  The next day onward we were in the Stein Watershed (Tundra Lake etc...)

Cheers!

Did you mean this one:

It was taken from a helicopter :)

Due to the weather combining with the general physical challenges of the terrain, this was probably the most demanding hike I have ever done presently.
