Coach's Corner - Sat Feb 24th - No touch icing
« on: February 24, 2007, 05:08:56 PM »

A good "Coaches Corner" today raising the issue of no touch icing.  I can't skate to save myself so therefore don't play hockey, but I do enjoy sitting and watching hockey like a true Canadian.  Granted it doesn't happen every game, but there have been some wicked injuries from people getting nudged or hit while going to get the puck on an icing.

No touch icing seems to work well in the international spectrum as well as offering safety to the earlier levels of hockey so why not try it in the pros?  It might save some of those damaging injuries and it gives the players (and the fans watching) more time for their team to shoot pucks on net.

The only disadvantage I can think of implementing this rule is when players are able to beat out the icing thus saving their team having to take the faceoff in their own zone.

I'm always up for safety first, as no-one wants to see anyone get seriously hurt.  At the same time though, I love the game the way it is so would it have that much of an impact?

Any thoughts or suggestions on this matter?

I wouldn`t mind a no touch icing rule as it would have a very limited impact throughout the game. I am getting tired of all the rule changes though...enough is enough already >:(

I agree. Let's wait a while before we reinvent the game again.

I say leave it alone. The next thing you know there will be no more hitting. More injuries occur from a hit from behind, knee on knee, slashing, or sucker punches ect then from chasing the puck to stop an icing call. It is totally up to the player whether they want go after the puck by hitting someone. so let's not turn this game into womens hockey where there is no hitting at all.

I say leave the damn game alone !!!! it survived the way it is for a long long time, now nobody is happy unless they change everything, Freak if they were worried about injuries there are a million other changes they would have to make aswell, I love watching the race for the puck, I think it is an exciting part of the game, most of the new rules suck suck suck !!! I am sick and tired of them changing everything

Blame it on Gary Bettman. You keep hearing about how fans hate fighting, etc. Funny nobody left early during yesterday's brouhaha between the Senators and the Sabres.

I think they should keep the Touch icing because then the opponent can get the puck and negate the icing which gets rid of needless faceoff's which makes the the game have more flow the instigater rule can go though :P

I say change to no touch. I like most of the changes they have made. It has opened up the game and has made "The Trap" all little more difficult to play. I think they should have no touch icing but use the rule in place now that if it is an attempted pass wave off the icing. The few times they do it now, the defensive player skates to the puck touches it and expects the whistle but it doesn't come then they get hammered into the boards by the offensive player. IF it was no touch the defensive player would know right away if it is or isn't an icing the moment the puck crosses the red line.
