Hey there biffchan your report could almost be my report. Just back as well. We arrived at the Boulder Run at 12:30PM. (girlfriend and myself) and saw that it was somewhat crowded with about 4 or 5 kids running around, 2 female adults watching them and 4 guys fishing away. They had built a nice fire which would prove very useful throughout the afternoon. It was a beautiful day, some sun, a little cloudy and some wind which played havoc at times with my fire line. After a quick hello to the people that were there before us I settled in to a spot a little away from where I had hoped to fish, but I hoped in time that spot would become available.
The water was lower than last Saturday when I was last at the river but it was a nice medium green colour, not quite aqua-marine but a tad darker. The flow was very, very good and the depth was fairly constant as I kept the distance from float to hook about 4 and a half to 5 ft. or even shorter at times. I started out using pro-cured coho roe with a # 4 hook but after awhile started switching bait and used a colorado and then a single egg with cream wool, all to no avail. We were invited over to the fire pit that these very gracious people had started and I learned that last weekend they arrived at this same spot just in time to watch a lucky fisherman land a 15LBer. But none of them had any further luck.
The spot that I coveted eventually became open and away I went fishing with such ferocity that I must of scared all those steelies away because nary one ventured my way. Well actually one did venture my way, and it was just after I had met Norm2, shook his hand and talked for a while. He worked his way down and then up past me again working the river like a true pro, while I, steady as an Oak fished away. I looked at my coho roe and thought to myself, damn, it's hanging, fix it but just as quickly made one more cast. Blooop, down she went. A sure bite as I had covered that spot so many times I knew the distance. I quickly re-baited and cast and cast some more, all over the place but I could'nt get her to work up an appetite. Woe is me. Woe is me! So close to steely lip's and yet so far. Oh, woe is me.
We fished from 12:30 to 5:30 and people left and people came. A somewhat busy little place. But nary a steelhead to be seen. Oh well, we sure enjoyed ourselves, made some new friends and learned a valuable lesson. If you think it's wrong, don't wait one cast, fix it. Good Fishing All.
