Do not give up just yet and if you really want to get one on the fly do not put it down for the drift rod. 4 times is nothing to not get a fish. Make sure you cover a lot of water is the best advise I can give weather that be with the fly or gear. And dont worry once you get one its all down hill from there.

Its tough on the Cheddar with the fly. i mean you can cheat and fish an egg pattern with shot and bobber but you should just grab the gear rod instead then. I have hooked several this year on the spey even more than one in a trip but i havent managed to land one for some reason  :'(

i agree with josh, don't give up on the fly just yet, when you catch your first one it will be beautiful. steelheading is not a numbers game.
