Anyone interested in distance casting ?
« on: July 07, 2013, 10:38:16 PM »

Just seeing if anyone else is interested in distance casting if you are perhaps
We can meet up and find a safe field to practice .
As I went over 500ft tonight an unused football field would work great .

That is the downside they cost a pretty penny however after
Casting one I don't think i would be happy with anything else .
That combined with almost no weight the 12'6 comes in at a little over 9oz
And the 8' at 2.5oz this is the blank weight.

I buy them from here
http://www.hatterasjack.com/index.htm
Ask for Ryan or tommy .
I've never been bottom bouncing but the local tackle store said they would be perfect for it .

so what do you use them for, competitions  :-\
I used to surf fish in the UK and we had to cast a 6oz lead a long way but never that far

Surf fishing in mexico mostly however I'm going to give the rod a try for springs and sturgeon.
Casting distance is more for fun .
Plus if you hook a fish at that distance there's not much line left ;)

Just curious. What percentage of a long cast is your rod and what percentage is the reel? I would geuss maybe 80 rod and 20 reel. Obviouly you would need a reel that could hold enough line but how important do you think the reel is in distance casting?

Hard to say as I'm fairly new to distance casting I would say
That a very large percentage goes to the rod and its ability to to flex and quickly recover.
Huge casts can be made from both baitcasters and fixed spool reels.
Also the type of cast ,when i started out a overhead cast was my choice
Now after watching YouTube I learned the off the ground cast it made a huge difference.
Just to confirm I was correct i went out a measued last nights distance  482'.
It would have been longer but putting a lead through a car window was not an option :)

The reel is fairly important, if the rod has a large butt ring you want a wide spool, (as on a 'big-pit' reel) so as much line can come off as fast as possible.  That's only one variable in making your cast, of course, but there are a ton of big-pit reels sold to carpers in Britain and Europe for that reason.  My Shimano 10000 xte-a's on a normal 12' carp rod put a 3oz lead and bait over 100 yards on a good day and my rods don't have the 40mm butt rings.  Though they're not a big-pit reel the 10000 class reel is large and hooking a fish at a hundreed yards still leaves about 250 on the spool.  Century is a very well known manufacturer of carp rods and in the UK lots of tackle shops and custom builders use their blanks.

Stormhaven,

Is this a prebuilt rod that you bought off the Hatteas Jack site? If so, Do you have any pics to post up? (the 1505) I checked out the site, but can't seem to find any pictures of their builds. I'm mainly interested in what type of components they use-i.e. handles, trim, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Morning Fishawn
I don't have a file hosting site to use however i would be more than happy to take pictures and either text or email them to you .
If you are able to repost the pics that would be awesome ( my computer skills are somewhat lacking)
I will PM you my contact phone number.
And yes this is a prebuilt rod .
John.
