float tube?
« on: June 07, 2010, 07:19:06 PM »

I'm wanting to get a float tube but I'm not quite sure of spending the money if i wont use it.
i want to know a few things before i get one and i hope some of you can help.
first of all is it worth it?
secondly, can u get going good enough to troll a fly while kicking along?
are they a pain if its a bigger lake? and
what are pros and cons of them?

I used a float tube for years and enjoyed it but i like my fishcat V tube much better. I assume a pontoon would be another step up.

It's a lot of kicking on a large lake. Yes you can troll slowly.

Pro's are it gets you out on the lake (better than shore) and it is relatively cheap.

They are also light so you can pack them into the lakes which have no road access to launch boats etc. They are also fast and easy and sometimes when I have a limited number of hours to fish the boat is a bit cumbersome so I grab my tube(which I keep inflated) and head out.
I much prefer to fish from my boat as it is more comfortable but the tube is vital when the boat is not an option. It's all about getting out on the water away from the hoards.

Yes it is worth it!
You can get a U-boat at army and navy for around a hundred bucks.
The kicking around i never really notice fatigue until i am out of the water, and you can be surprised how far you can get around in them.
The Pros far outweigh the cons
There is nothing better than being on a lake in a tube all by yourself it's so peacefull. Best medicine i ever had :)

check out the guys in float tubes who catch just as many or just as few as the boats.   I was a tuber for a decade and had a great time until.    Yes until I got old and my legs started to cramp ,  get cold,   tired from being on big lakes.    The worst was when I had to go # 1  and was desparate to reach shore.    So I transitioned to the U boat which was faster.   Then finally I got a pontoon boat and wow.   It was easy,  fast,  and could handle wicked waves and wind.    So if you are middle age or older ;  go  pontoon boat.

They suck on big lakes as big lakes usually have more wind. Nothing worse than trying to get back to shore when battling a heavy wind. They are great for small protected lakes. Unless you are in terrible shape you shouldnt notice any fatigue in using one even if its all day. More cons is your limited in the amount of stuff you can carry with you, you have to wear waders all the time, you have to go to shore to pee. They are allot cheaper than a boat so if funds are limited this may be the answer.

oh yeah I forgot to mention the float tubes are light.   We hiked into some remote lakes and it was a totally different kind of day.   So quiet,  and fishing was great.    There are some books about float tubing also.   Maybe the shops have them .
