Title: 2022 Interior BC Lake Season Updates
Post by: Rodney on April 08, 2022, 10:57:12 AM
Tunkwa Lake is now completely ice-free as of this morning, one of the earliest in recent years. :)

Not a whole lot happening, so put together a video tutorial for anyone who wants to try fly fishing with the indicator at lakes for the first time this season. ;D

great photo... on the first look I didn't notice the boats with anglers almost obscured by falling snow.

Nice tunkwa rainbow too!

Thanks Ralph. Conditions of the fish are just perfect this year in that lake. It should be an excellent season for anyone who is heading up that way.

Tunkwa has a quite early ice off date this year. But it came with a long period of cold weather which slowed the early fishing epic. Bigger fish mostly stayed in deeper water. The hot action along shore weed line did not happen during my stay there.

Upon leaving the resort on Sunday, there are hundreds fish surfing and jumping at end of the resort bay right in front of the camp site. Some really nice size fish showed themselves.

I checked the resort bay every evening hoping that they'd go in there to feed but it was empty during my entire stay. I love fishing in there!

How’s Lundbom lake fishing? Thinking of doing a day trip there.

Can Tunkwa be access for single day use or do you have to go thru the resort.  The parks website shows the  provincial campground is partially closed.  Want to camp and fish different lakes but Tunkwa resort has a 3 night minimum stay which kinda sucks if you want to check out different lakes.

Day access/boat launch to Tunkwa is through the day use area on the south end of the lake. No overnight camping there. The Provincial Park on the north end of Tunkwa is available for camping by the night, no reservations though. The North Leighton campground is still closed.

Thanks, we just got back and can confirm No Drinkable water available. For others unsure , Pack it with you.
Fish were biting , but this trip the winds kept us off the lake for a lot of it.
oh well.

Well to be honest, i caught nothing. lol but my son manage a couple smaller ones and one good sized one stripping an olive California Neal
and one of the smaller ones on a red rib chronomid. But we did see a few fellows who announced with great delight  " Nice fish!!" , 5lbs was a weight i overheard.
I see that wind didn't die down , so we made the right call pulling the plug on the camping trip early. My tent was taking beating in the wind. and I imagine no sleep would have been had.
Sorry we missed the chance to meet you.
next time perhaps .
BTW my son and I really appreciated everyone who puts FWR together. It's instrumental in keeps us informed , enlightened , and entertained.
thanks!

Thanks! ;)

So I was just there this afternoon, in that hurricane. ;D That was probably the windiest day I've ever fished and I had both anchors at the front instead of one at each end to stop the boat from being blown away. I ended up landed ten, nine of them were Fraser Valley rainbows and they were all around 16" long. The first fish of the day came 5 minutes after I anchored, and it was a Blackwater rainbow around 20". All were caught in 30 to 35 feet of water.

Yep. Wind is a killer on stillwaters. So did you go with a sinking line technique or spinning rod set-up? Last time I fished beside you, I used a ridiculously long leader with an indicator. Sinking line works much better! LOL.

I'm side-lined for a bit. My wife fractured her right foot so we're waiting to see what the specialist has to say. Absolutely the wrong timing, as I waited all winter before getting ready to dust off the rods. But I know it's 100 times worse for my wife. Hope to be able to get out in June...

Yeah I saw the picture on my FB feed! Ouch! :-\

I had the gear setup down there instead of fly lol, I don't think even with a heavy sink line two days ago there was no way to keep the flies at where I wanted to be. That was by far the roughest lake conditions I've fished in. The last two seasons I'e started using these Shimano Talora kokanee trolling rods for this style of fishing, with a tiny low profile baitcasting reel, and it's awesome. The rods are so whippy that the take downs look so hard in the rod holder. ;D

Yesterday it was tougher fishing, used the same setups again, at 35ft. It took five hours before somebody switched the bites on. By that point almost everyone had given up so only Nick and I caught fish.

Very nice Rod! Beautiful fish - some of the best eating are from that lake. Yes, I can definitely see an advantage to using a gear set-up during windy conditions. Plus, when you cast out (I should say drop down), you are in the zone very quickly. With my type 3 sinking line, I have to wait at least a minute or two.

Those are domestics? What little piggies they are!

Are you using a 3 point anchor system and still unable to cope with the wind?

I have one anchor from the bow, one from the stern, 20lb each. In the end I had both anchors from the bow and that did the job.

We were just up the highway from you Rod (5A) and had a couple problems with the high winds keeping us off the water for a few days . We had the snowline one day being below 1137 meters . The last few days were fantastic as there were lots of hatches coming off almost all day .We were into fish from around zzzzzzzzzzzzz 10:30ist through around 4 pm before it slowed down . The indicators were slippin under almost every cast . Lots of fish over the 50 centimeter mark that made it a challenge to get our limit . One at 24 inch in the ice cooler it went . My neighbor at camp landed a beautiful Fraser Valley rainbow 8 lb.. As the weather started to cooperate our last 3 days it was sad to say so long to a half brutal stormy days to nice warmer sunny days for now .  8) 8) 8) 8) ;D

When the weather cooperates, as it did this past trip, the fishing is just that much more fun.
Having the fish bite , also helps. Fishing Lundbom Lake, in 35Ft of water, using #14 Black, White Ribbed, w/ white bead. Lots of bites, only a few to the boat.
The weather this time around was perfect.
Thanks for all tips !

Well that was fun today. ;D They were a little tougher to entice because they were so stuffed with chironomids, but these two managed to get about 20 hits and landed 5.

Got hungry, popped up to Merritt again for a day to harvest a fish. This one was 22" long, weighed 4lb. It worked out to be around $30/lb. Gourmet. ;)

Unfortunately, the weather has other plans... I'm growing ghost peppers and scotch bonnets from seed for the first time and they're still between 1-2" tall due to the cool weather.
