Title: Shotgun
Post by: adriaticum on January 07, 2013, 11:06:33 PM
Hi guys,

Looking to buy my first shotgun and wondering what some of you are using and would recommend?
This would be used basically for waterfowl and small game.
I'm not partial to any brands.

Thanks!

Price wise I would go with the Remington 870 supermag I have had mine for 2 months now and I shoot it every weekend. The gt was $450 .
For o/u I shoot a Winchester 101 and it's a great shotgun but I only wish it was chambered in 3".

How do you interpret this:
-It is unlawful to hunt with a set gun, or to hunt wildlife with a pump,
repeating or auto-loading shotgun with a magazine capable of holding
more than two shells. Where the use of a shotgun is allowed for
hunting or trapping big game, an unplugged shotgun holding more than
2 shells and firing single projectiles only (slugs) may be used.

So basically you can't hunt with anything that has a magazine with more than 2 shells?

That refers to shotguns only. You can can have 2 shells in the magazine (if it's capable of holding more than 2 shells you need to have a plug in it) and 1 shell in the chamber.

I recently got the browning bps field stalker 12 gauge pump.
Quite happy with it and shoots 3in shells.
What it doesnt like is those real cheap Canadian Tire or Walmart shells.
Switched to a quality shell and all is good.
My hunting buddy just picked up the Benelli Nova pump which is sweet also.
So many to choose from.
Go to Italia and talk to them. Very knowledgeable people unlike Wholesale Sports.

Right, shotguns, I was wondering if it's worth spending the extra money on a pump action if I couldn't use it for hunting.
But I guess there is something to block the magazine.
This Remington 870 seems pretty cheap and it's a classic and since I am just starting to hunt sounds like this is what I should be getting.
International Shooting Supplies have them for $400.
Sounds like a good price.

That's exactly why I bought the 870. It's a reliable gun that I can take and use everywhere . I bought  my down at the Italian sporting goods

+1 for the Browning BPS bottom load and eject nice for blind hunting.
This gun is so smooth right out of the box. The 870 is a great gun but the newer ones aren't what they use to be.
Easily over 10,000 rounds thru a BPS and no problems, but it is probably $100 more the nthe 870.

The bottom load and eject is a real plus when hunting with others.
Nothing worse than your buddies empty shells bouncing off you when he shoots.
Also great for lefties like my hunting buddy. No shells  flying across the shooters face.
I grew up with a Ithaca 37 which is also bottom load eject and just like that feature alot.
Wanted to be able to shoot 3in and old gun wouldnt do that.Thats why the new bps
Ducks close next Friday so I better get out soon. Maybe nightflight tonite :)

I used a Beretta Xetrema shotgun for waterfowl hunting but for beginner I recommend  Remington 870 or take look at the Benelli Nova pump which is reasonable price shotgun.

Look up Huntingbc.ca lots good information there on waterfowl hunting section.

I actually got mine from Wholesale Sports in Langley.
But I knew the gun I wanted already and had some gift certificates for there.
You being a lefty. the Browning BPS would be a good choice.
Got a nice drake mallard and drake widgeon tonite.
Missed a few...but thats not the guns fault ;D

Thanks guys,
I am on huntingbc.ca under the same name, but since I'm new to hunting I haven't posted anything.
Still waiting for my PAL which should be ready in a few weeks then I can get some rifles.
I will get this BPS 12g with the 28" barrel, I figure the longer the barrel the more accurate it should be from Wholesale sports.
Probably also get that A-Bolt Stalker in 30-06 for big game.
Also thinking about getting a lever action .22 for shooting at the range.
I figure Langely or Semiahmoo fish and game clubs should be closest since I'm in North Surrey.
I hear Burke Mountain shooting range is pretty good.
Chilliwack is kind of far, but I would love to shoot there too since I'm fishing there all the time anyways.

If you're a lefty looking for a pump the bps is your guy.
If you're looking for a 30-06 have a look at the ballistics comparison of the 7mm as well, it is a smaller diameter bullet but man does it fly straight and packs just as much punch. Food for thought.

I also added an upgraded sight for my bps.  Its called a " Bird Buster",
It sits right at the end of the barrel on the rail and is magnettic.
No tools or modifying needed.
Around $20 at Wholesale.
You'll love it and when the light hits it,  it lights right up for easy targetting.
Worth looking into.
You'll love the BPS.
Mines all black and didnt like the camo ones myself.
Let us know how it all goes.

Shotgun or birds, I prefer semi-auto, smoother shooting, less recoil specially with all the new high velocity shells on the market.  I alway say, buy the best you can afford and take care of it, it will save you money in a long run.  I now shooting a Benilli SBE 2, very well shooting gun with minimal recoil. My other friend just got a Benilli Vinci, which is the new redesigned version of the SBE 2.    For your big game rifle, 30-06, 7mm, 300mag, 300wsm... Don't really matter too much but make sure you get a gun with a clip, drop plate sucks!!    If you only going to get 1 rile for all your big game hunting, I would suggest you for a 300mag or 300wsm. With a 180gr bullet, it will knock down bear, deer, moose, elk bison. Some people will say that is over kill for deer, wasting too much meat.. But who cars, deer down is a deer down, so what you lost couple packs of burger or steak... It's better to have some waste rather then the trophy class deer that got away wounded.

Thanks Steelhead_King, I have decided on a 30-06 rifle, probably a Browning A-Bolt for big game.

Overkill? I'd say... I've seen entire front quarters blown out from a 300 on a deer

My last mule deer that I shot blow the whole right front quarter too with my 300mag because i took the shot right through shoulder.   So what I lost a few roast, steaks and few packs or burgers..some times you have to willing to lose before you gain... break some bones, drop it on its own track, let him bite the dust..  yea to lots of people said its a waste of good meat but I am willing to exchange all those meat for my 190 class buck stone dead on its track..

I guess some hunt for ego and others hunt for meat.
My 7mm 170gr. Drops adult moose in it's tracks. It's all about shot placement right?

I confess, i am trophy hunter.. if i want meat, its cheaper to buy them why invest so much time and money for it?. anyway, that's another topic.  I do agreed shot  placement is important but if your gun is under power and shot is off then you loose the animal..  To minimize this problem and maximize the chance for a kill, power is the only option. Really, 300mag is not that big of a gun. It's way less power then my new long range rifle - Sauer 202 highland in 300 weatherby mag.   Don't get me wrong I do have many guns in my safe, but if I can only pick one for all around, 300mag or WSM will be my choice.

I got both 300 mag and WSM..  Both in Tikka T3 lite stainless.. The WSM shoot 10ft/s faster according to the  factory dyno. i first got a 300 mag and let my buddy use it on of of the trip and totally forgot about it so I went and got a WSM.. Lol    They both shoot the same for me but some ppl say the WSM got a touch less kick because it got little more powder burn....

With regards to the shotgun, the length of the barrel does not always translate to greater accuracy at longer range shots. Also if you are going to be hunting small game and doing some upland bird hunting a shorter barrel on a shotgun will make it easier to to get the gun started especially when hunting in thick cover. By shorter gun barrel length, let us say (24 to 26"). Getting a membership at a gun club which has a trap range is also a good thing as shooting trap will really help to improve one's shotgunning skills.

I use a 300 WSM and its perfect for any big game animal, I'd rather kill the deer in its tracks, lose some meat but not let it suffer then have it get away wounded.
