I was golfing in the burnaby central park where there is a very small lake
I saw lots of little golden/orange color fish they are like 200 in a pack
also saw some big fish 3~4 lb like, wondering if those are carps??
i pretty sure the lake is not for fishing but are those fish wild? or people just put in for the park purpose...

There is a no fishing and no feeding sign near the shore close to the parking lot. They look like carp to me, and I have also seen tiny orange colored carp about 1 inch in length (must be their offspring). There's also turtles too, that are may be 6 inches long.

That is interesting, because flyfishing was listed as one of the passive outdoor activities on the Central Park Management plan in 2009.

my house is right infront of central park and i grew up catching fish in central park as i was a kid.
the little orange fishes you see are rosey minnows native to north america, they are sold at petsmart as live bait.
there are carp, koi, brown bullhead, crayfish, stickleback and had a very nice population of cutthroats in the creek that connected both ponds, however all the cutthroats had dissapeared many years ago.

It looks like in the Upper Pond you can practice fly fishing. The lower pond by the golf course is where I have seen the no fishing sign.

rosy red minnows, also known as fathead minnows. Petsmart sells them for 14 cents a piece. Good pond fish.

Well, I saw the fly fishing sign when I first started out about 3 years ago. Went ahead and got my rod, hooked into a bunch of carp, and ended up running from the park officers :P Guess I was being stupid

That is funny. I'm guessing you were fly fishing in the upper pond. I can't imagine them giving your grief if you're just doing catch and release. In the lower pond, there is a very busy trail all around the pond, so you'd be hooking just as many by-standers as carp.

I'm hoping this snakehead is caught and killed right away! These fish are one of the most dangerous invasive species to be illegally introduced in the United States that one state even put a bounty on dead snakeheads to try and fight against it. Hoping the investigation starts ASAP as our fishery will change forever. I don't understand why any of these fish are even sold alive?
Do google or YouTube "Snakehead/Fishing" and you'll understand the extent of what some ignorant person did by introducing it to a pond. This can really escalate to something unimaginable...;(

I was going to post that article too. lol Well, yeah looks like someone dumped it in there from an aquarium. Or someone is hoping that they these fish will basically multiply so they can grow, be caught, and eaten fresh.
What I'm thinking is that wouldn't these fish die anyway once winter hits? At least that helps, somewhat. I'm pretty sure they require warmer water to survive. And that pond ices over every winter.
Well guys, looks like we need a volunteer to try and fish it out. lol Who cares if you're not allowed to fish there. You're doing the pond a favor by catching it.

National Geographic has referred to snakeheads as "Fishzilla"[2][3][4] and the National Geographic Channel reports that the "northern snakehead reaches sexual maturity by age 2 or 3. Each spawning-age female can release up to 15,000 eggs at once. Snakeheads can mate as often as five times a year. This means in just two years, a single female can release up to 150,000 eggs."

apparently we should kill any snakefish once spot
they are threat to any freshwater fish including salmon!! especially in fraser river we dont want to see big numbers of snakehead
unfortuanlly i think the population of these fish will increase in the next decade or so they are in NA for some time

I haven't been to T&T for the longest time, but years ago they used to have tanks full of them.

Someone should organize an outing where we can all stand shoulder to shoulder around the pond (take some pressure off the cap) and try to get that sucker out.

bit of a trite reply from you rodney. i posted months back about snakeheads and the dangers of them getting into our system ... and inviting your input;
no response. so what is your position on this rodney?

If the fisheries, environment ministry as well as the city of burnaby approves of us fishing these suckers out, I'm more than willing to put the time in attempting to catch them. I'm sure a better method of electroshock or just poisoning the two ponds is a better idea especially if it's spawning season for these creatures. It's been stated that depending on the snakehead species, it can spawn from 2 to 4 times in a year. At 15,000 eggs per spawn, that's a pretty serious problem.
Do keep us posted if you hear from the regional officials, Rod. I'm sure a few from this forum will be more than willing to help out in anyway towards an attempt to eradicate this invasive species. Better now than be sorry later...

Do you remember where the seller was located?? If it was Burnaby or Vancouver, then it could quite possibly be the same person. I hope no one has dumped them in say....Deer Lake. since it's pretty close to Central Park.

FWIW an angler told me one was caught in Deer Lake last summer.
I don't think snakeheads are going to take over or start eating people cats and puppies

That's good to hear the ministry is going to set traps and gillnet the entire lake, better safe than sorry.

hopefully if there are any snakeheads in that pond it will die off when the cold wheather hits.i had owned a few of these fishes in the past but they died becuase they jumped out of the fish tank.the one in the pics on the province look like the Emperor snakehead....these guys are nasty trust me.i used to throw a bunch of feeder in my tank to see what would happen.....the thing ate till it was twice its normal size!they have a very big appetite.all i know is that they dont do well in cold water i was surprised to find out that its in central park i always thought our waters would be too cold for them.
