Title: Paper on Fisheries Management
Post by: slyrod on November 13, 2011, 01:06:01 AM
Hey guys, Im currently going to SFU and taking an environmental course and thought it would be a perfect opportunity to write my paper on fisheries management.  I have been reading the fishing related issues and news thread and other sources to get a head start on it and so far I got this...
1. Improper impositions of commercial and recreational fishing regulations
           -better stocking assessments
-better commercial and recreational control and action
-thompson steelhead and the commercial interferences/ways to improve to a sustainable river.
-Budget cuts with the DFO leading to less action (ie. less control over fishers)
2. The creation of dams all throughout BC rivers
-Don't know too much about this but just talk about the how dam implementation has a negative effect on our fish species
3. The unethical and misuse of fish farms/hatcheries.
           - chilliwak steelhead issue
           - ISA lethal virus spread (plus others spread by fish farms)

Was just wondering if this is a good start and if i'm missing any important topics I could talk about.
Thanks

I think you could write a pretty good paper on #3 alone......

I would dial it back and focus on one topic assuming that this is only a term paper.  A focused paper usually turns out a lot better than one that inadequately tackles a large range of topics.

Solid topics that come to mind are:

1) Consequences/issues with hatchery enhancement of salmon and steelhead
2) Regulation of commercial/first nations/recreational salmon fisheries
3) Fish farm regulation/issues
4) Independent power projects throughout the province
5) Environmental threats to salmon and steelhead spawning streams (excessive water removal for irrigation, logging, increasing temperatures etc.)

Cheers,

(Recent SFU grad) Jordan
