Some of us cannot afford the real safari, so we'll just have to settle with the zoo ones. ;D

Leopard (Panthera pardus)
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The leopard is a strong solitary hunter. Due to their steath and camouflage they are very hard to see when on safari. Many tourists complete their trip never seeing one or only seeing one from a far distance.
We were lucky... up in the North of the Serengeti (Lobo area) we came across a solo leopard resting only 50 ft from the road. He sat and let us shoot for quite some time as his belly was full from the recent kill he had dragged up into a nearby tree. It was early morning, so some shots were taken at ISO6400.
Just when we thought it couldn't get much better - his brother came by and the two hung out and played a bit before moving on to their next adventure for the day. Wow!

Lion (Panthera leo)
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Lions usually hunt in prides. The females hunt and the males show up for food when they are good and ready. Once the kill has been taken down and the females have had a chance to tear up the carcase, the cubs feed and then the male comes for food. There is one male to a pride of females, but sometimes young males will roam together for a while and hunt in a coordinated unit, not having a pride of their own. We saw many lions on our trip... it almost became commonplace. The lioness in these pictures has been collared (for studies probably). We saw 4 collared lions during our time in the Serengeti. The two males were estimated at around 10 yrs old and the big standing guy was probably about the same. His pride was all sleeping in the tall grass - about 8 lionesses and 10 cubs. The lion in the tall grass that looks like he just showered is probably a young male at 2-3 years old. It's quite unusual to see such old males hanging together - likely brothers. Wow - these cats are HUGE!

Excellent photographs everyone.  I would tend to agree with Marmot that Eagleeye's photo is of a beaver and not an otter though, admittedly, identifying aquatic mammals is not my forte.

Reason for edit: Couldn't seem to figure out how to attach my own photographs.

I had no idea there were beavers in Richmond until this morning I pulled into my spot to fish and he/she must have been resting on the shore when I heard the tail splash and he took off.  I lived in Richmond for 15years never saw a beaver.  Otter, Muskrat sure.  Didn't even know beavers could handle salty water.  Unfortunately my zoom is not so good.

Wish I had a better zoom

Fox at 12,000 feet

Last weekend, I had a chance to go up Pike’s Peak in Colorado (DROVE UP). It was beautiful. At mile 13 of 16 they had the road closed due to the high snow on the road still. Mile 13 had us up at 12,500 feet! I could handle a slow walk up there, but much else resulted in some serious gasping. Yikes!

On the road on the way up, we ran across the cutest little fox that seemed to possibly be too tame for his own good… Here are a few shots of the critter:

Shot with Canon 7D and the 100-400L

You have to wonder how many chances in life you'll get to have an experience like that, hey?  My brother and I were turkey hunting two years back and had a female turkey follow us around like a dog for a few hours...she'd run when we ran, sit when we sat, often within a few feet from us.  Made for some great pictures, but also made us worried for such a friendly bird come fall when the season opened for all turkeys and not just the males.

cheers.

I hope you enjoyed them... it's quite a nice zoo, roomier than many but feel sorry for the animals - they can never really have enough room there, but it does allow people to learn about them and to understand the conservation needs in a more face-to-face way.

There is a herd of hippos in the water in the left distance and in the centre a male moving towards us that, although it doesn't look it in the picture, is way too close.   In the foreground is the bow of our watercraft.

Will they stop a hippo if it decides to take a little nibble?  Not a chance!

Will it keep you from swimming if the hippo decides to give you a little nudge?  Not likely.

Tomorrow's Hunter

A lion cub works through the grass, next to our safari vehicle, wary of us but needing to get to the new pride resting rock.

We had the good fortune of coming across a Cheetah, without a hundred other vehicles surrounding us.  This beauty gave us quite the show!

Nothing quite as refreshing as a good mud bath at the end of a hot day in the Serengeti.

Eland

After having been hunted to near extinction by the British, the surviving Eland (Taurotagus oryx) tend to stay far from the roads (about the distance of an old British Rifle away from the road).  We were lucky to come across this small group of them, only about 100 feet from the roadside.

Eland are the largest of the african antelopes and weigh between 450-600kg.

Elephants are such majestic giants that roam the plains of the Serengeti.  They seem to move at a slow lumbering pace, but can really move if they are angry or frightened. They show deep bonds between a family and have the ability to be incredibly gentle and delicate while in the blink of an eye they can overturn a truck.  Incredible animals.  I wish humans would stop killing them.

These two young elephants met up in the midst of the herd and pretty much “shook trunks” like we would shake hands. Sad to think of the likelihood of one or both of these being killed later in life, simply for their tusks. My deep thanks goes out to all that work to ensure these two and all the animals have a chance to live and die on nature’s terms, not mankind’s. ❤️
