A ban has been imposed on the recreational harvest of prawns and shrimp near Port Alberni, as part of the strategy to increase stocks. Jim Robson, conservation and protection supervisor for west-coast Vancouver Island, said the federal Fisheries and Oceans-ordered ban is intended to avoid egg-bearing female prawns being caught in winter. The ban is in effect until Feb. 15 and from March 1 to March 15.
