“Report a Habitat Violation” Using the Salmonopolis.ca Website
 
The Sierra Club of BC and Suzuki Foundation have created an online form (available on our Report A Violation page ( http://www.salmonopolis.ca/salmonopolis/mi_violation/mi_violation.asp )., to enable the general public to report ongoing damage to fish habitat that is not being proactively addressed by DFO.  This is not meant to replace the Observe Record and Report service of DFO, and we encourage everyone to report any problems to DFO first.  But if a problem persists, we will take your report – it can be anonymous – and do the following:
 
1. Make sure DFO (and any other relevant levels of government) know about the full extent of the problem.
2. Send our investigator (an expert in documenting habitat violations for private prosecutions) to scrutinize any serious problems to ensure action is taken by government and violators.
3. Post photos of habitat destruction on our website, as part of our “Violation of the Month” feature on the homepage.
4. In the most serious ongoing cases, pursue private prosecutions against habitat violators.
 
We are trying to spread the word throughout BC, especially among fish lovers/watershed volunteers, to encourage people to submit reports and photos.  This can be done by email, regular mail, or the phone.  In January we received 10 reports – from Streamkeepers, sports fishermen, and general public – so it is apparent that there is a real need for this.
