Having a warehouse business i get to meet a lot of fellow golfers, fisherman, hunters etc. and get the scoop on what is going on up there...a guy came in today, (very credible guy) and said he has heard from three or four of his other fishing buddies that the DFO is saying that they are seeing NOW upwards of 300,000 coho's hitting the Frazier...Now the guy isn't a complete jack o and was very sincere in what he was saying, we gabbed about the vedder etc. and he was spot on on what he was saying about it...i asked if that was true were they hitting the rivers at all..they have to have been..he said he didn't know but that he was out on the stave this weekend and pulled in bright coho's with sea lice and saw a guy land a monster chum that was so chrome they thought he had landed a huge coho or silver...sea lice on it as well.....
Anyone heard anything about this???? i am such a sucker for these stories...( i almost got a "free puppy") :-[

Chehalis ? but I don't think the run is that big :o :-\
-
Not too likley, maybe knock of a zero but even then I'm skeptical. :-\
-
my dad's buddy works for fisheries and oceans and said that all the coho are heading into the fraser now. they were just late.
-
I've heard the same story Golfman but haven't been out lately to check it out. Maybe this weekend.
-
holy crap would that ever make my season!! must make some phone calls!

me too..i think i'm going to try and talk my buddy into a day of "blast and cast"...head out real early for ducks then up to the vedder.....i may be nuts but i was up a couple weeks ago and had three strong hits..one was on and dancing for a few seconds..all with spoons..and all were silver..i was trying to talk my buddy into believing that they were steelhead but i'm thinking they may be late coho's..
-
Im calling DFO tomorrow when theyre open to get the skinny....I'll let you know if i remember! I think their number down here is 604-666-0384.... only open until 4pm though.
-
ive herd it all too, but we wont find out till we fish!
-
Don't get your hopes up, guys.
-
not getting myn up, but that would be cool with steelie and coho ;)
-
ooooh baby !! confirm it
-
Do you guys have any idea how many fish 300,000 is? Thats about 10X what the chilliwack river hatchery gets on a year.
-
I heard the same thing the other day from the guys at searun fly and tackle hopefully the reports are true,it would be a great new year to be fishing coho and steely in the system at the same time but i will believe it when i see it.
-
Typo, should of read 300,000 coho in the freezer

And there are 100's of streams that they are heading into... the per stream numbers aren't exactly going to be huge, would be my guess.
-
Actually, if there really were 300,000 fish (which is not gonna happen), you would see each individual river plugged with coho. That just ain't gonna happen.
-
Who dreams this stuff up ?
-
So that's how you build a rumour mill! ;D
-
So Buck, what your sayin is that you haven't seen an increase in numbers at the hatchery over the last few days?!?!? ;D ;D
-
We had late fresh coho showing up in both the Bulkley and Kispiox this year. I was getting them to the end of Oct. which is out of the norm. Hope its true for you guys and gals down south.
-
Big Steel, we have not seen an increase in coho numbers at the hatchery. There are a few fish holding in the channel below the foot bridge but most are in poor shape and ratty looking. We have not broken 6K back to the hatchery this year. Coho numbers in all the upstream tributaries are down by 90% from normal. Just to give you some idea, last year we counted 400 coho in Elk creek the first week in Dec., this year we counted 6 fish.
-
That is pretty much what I was expecting!! Thanks Buck. But, do I hope that there a more coho on the way? Yes I do. Do I think that they are still coming? Well it is now the middle of December. The last few years have seen a reduction in the number of coho returning. So NO, I think that it is very unlikely that we will see run of coho show up now. But I do hope that I am wrong!! ;D

Maybe it the water temparature that makes them late. They cannot come near the land because it's to warm and they waited till it is lot cooler. ;)
-
The strip of water that hugs the coast is cooler than the open ocean. Howver, if this was warmed then the migration paterns of salmon would shift northwards which would add distance to the fish's migration, possibly causing them to arrive late. Steelhead on the other hand are predominently open ocean and would be less susseptable to such phenominom, therefore arrive on time.
-
Has anyone considered that they could be STEELHEAD! :o :o :o :o
-
lol 300,000 steelies that would be a nice xmas present
