Title: "go to setup" for red springs
Post by: badboi on June 28, 2005, 12:31:03 PM
Allo!

so whats  your "go to setup" for Reds?  I have never caught one so I cant comment but if they are like whites then almost any colour wool combos with a 10-15 lb leader will work fine..

thanks

I go with a 20 lbs main and a 15-10 leader under a float.

If you want to specifically target springs be it red or white I would suggest casting lures or bait under a float or bar fish with a spin-n-glo and or bait (roe/prawn tails/scent).

I have only caught a couple reds from the vedder.  One was on crappy white spring roe and the other on orange wool i think.  This year i am gonna give roe sacs a try as well as procured roe.  I use 10lb ulragreen leader under a float.  Eagleye i like your idea of prawn tails.  I have used them for steelies and just might give them a try for reds.

I can't take any credit for the idea because I too haven't tried them yet for Springs but after reading about all of the success Chirs Gadsden has had with them I will definately be giving them a try this year. I've caught springs with the other methods I mentioned and I have Chris to thank for this new addition to my arsenal... Thanks Chris

Angler's West has them. I imagine most tackle shops carry them.

You may want to cure them with Pro Cure first

I buy them in Safeway. They have specials on like they do here in Chilliwack at the moment, 2 packages for $12.98.

I was able to get them also at Save on Foods. They were in a bin and sold as singles. I checked one of the stores here in Chilliwack and they did not have them, some other shops may. I liked to get them that way as I could pick out the smaller ones.

A hint keep them hidden deep in your freezer or your family will eat them on you. ;D ;D

I thaw what I will need for the trip, pro cure them, and then if you have some left over I just freeze them for the next trip.

I had seen them used by others in past years and caught a couple of springs on them as well as a couple of sockeye believe it or not before but was really not that confident using them.

This year I became sold on them as followers of my fishing diaries know I hooked 6 out of my 7 springs on them the last month. I certainly will try them for steelhead this winter maybe Coho will enjoy them also. Always pays to experiment.

Another note: just thought of this, there is other ones for sale called shrimp rings for around $4 I believe. Have not purchased them but "The Master " says they work.

No, Procure toughens it up a bit so they stay on the hook longer and as well as colouring them.

Thank you.
Is this 'pro cure' chemical or colouring available at Barry's?

Thank you.

Procure is available at most tackle shops and comes in a variety of different colors.  Double hot red (I believe it's called) works really well but there's other colors as well.  Also, if you're looking to use the prawn tails au naturel, just pour salt on them.  It leeches out the moisture and toughens them up too.

i have caught red springs on the chehalis using no2 red gamagatsu hook, 15 lb main, 10 lb leader, fire engine red wool, dark red (small amount) or sometimes green, bottom bouncing with a short leader (24 inch leader).  using this system i have also caught  summer run steelhead while targeting for springs.

also, if you are wanting prawn tails, i have found with steelhead that shrimp rings from the supermarket work or cooking up some fresh (must be fresh because the shell stays firmer), medium-large shrimp bought from the fishing boats in steveston works really well.  i usually take the head off and stick a round double sided pointed toothpick through the back of the shrimp to keep it straight and to keep it from spinning. i have also used pro cure with my freshly cooked shrimp or food colouring

i usually just attach it at the front part of the shrimp/prawn. i will often secure with spider thread so that it stays on longer.

if i am using ghost shrimp i fold the tail in half and put the hook through from the top and out the bottom so that the head of the shrimp is pointing down. i will also secure with spider thread since ghost shrimp are so fragile.

there is a great article in one of the STS magazines that showed how to rig shrimp and ghost shrimp. can't remember the month and too lazy to look but if i come across it i will inform you about it.
