Title: my first bass!
Post by: fishin_chick on May 24, 2005, 08:50:06 AM
Caught my first big mouth bass on Monday up in West Bank.  It was just a wee little guy, so I didnt even take a picture.  What's the diff between big mouth and small mouth, and I will SMACK the first person that says "duh...big mouth has big mouth...small mouth has small mouth".
I'd like to know if I can use the same sort of flies....etc.  (just wanna be prepared for the salt spring island trip!!!!)

The mouth of a big mouth extends past the eye whereas the smallmouth does not.

Way to go!  Just a few days ago I caught my first (and second) smallmouth.  My impression is that they are both agressive feeders, and when they are feeding both will hit all kinds of wierd contraptions flopping around on the surface, but that large mouth bass will hit even the most rediculous looking of these lures.

And there are those large mouths . . .

Now, hopefully some experts will weigh in here.

Largemouth, generally a lighter color from the Smallmouth, and as noted by FA....have a longer jawline,  prefer stillwaters, and hang close to vegetation, whereas the Smallmouth is, often as not, in rivers and lakes, tend to hang near dropoffs, and rocky bottoms.....remember, there is always the exception to the rule....have hooked some nice smallies in lilypadded lagoons....congrats on your initiation to bassin'.... 8)

A friend's girlfriend also caught her first bass at St Mary Lake this weekend. :)

Not too big, but the first is always exciting. Look how broad the tail is. :o

He said she is "hooked" now. ;D Of course she would be, she outfished him by two fish. :D

Thanks all!  Rodney,  Not trying for brownie points  ;) Just got really excited about fishing after monday's little outing!  What a great weekend it was!  Golfing, Fishing, ATVing , lots of sun, great company, plenty of cold adult beverages, and even won the poker tourney we had!  Very excited now about fishing St Mary next month!  So you reserved a cabana after all eh Rodney?

Gotta golf less, fish more. ;)

Yep, booked the cabana after being heckled by Nina too many times. I kind of just assumed Mark would reserve our usual cabana when I told him about the group trip. I phoned back two weeks later just to confirm my booking, and it turned out he didn't have it down so it was good that I called. :)

You guys should look into bringing boats instead of float tubes, gonna be hot... :o

Congrats on your first Bass. I know you don't want to here it but the most evident difference is the mouth, the bigger they get the more evident. Note the American term "Bucket Mouth". Some must have flies for your next Bass trip should include Crayfish, Leach, and Clouser's Deep Minnow.

Yeah, wish boats were options for all 4 of us, but I think dad can only fit 2 on the boat.  hmm....wonder if i can fish from my kayak?  how big is the lake?  hmmm...on second thought, wouldnt want to flip it.  maybe dad can take both boats...

Well, TtotheE said you guys can bring two boats with the aid of the trailer. Plenty of time to plan.... :)
