Hey CJ, I got the answer after staring at it for a while... I posted it but then thought, why spoil it for everybody.  But then again, if you don't have it figured out, the answer wouldn't make much sense anyway...

Ah, from "The Cukoo's Egg".

So given, you've figured out the answer to that....when does a 4 show in the "series"?

The Cuckoo's Egg?

Did a few more by hand but quickly realized that was going nowhere, so...

perl -e '@a = (1); $s = 1; do { print "$s: ", @a, "\n"; @b = (); do { $d = shift @a; $c = 1; while ($a[0] == $d) { shift @a; $c++ }; push @b, $c, $d; } while $#a >= 0; $s++; @a = @b; } while 1;'

Still waiting for the answer to the question about the 4.  Apparently a) a Sun E450 isn't very fast, and b) it's quite a while.  :)

Edit:  Darned trick questions...
