I want to take my son out for pinks next year...never done it before...we will be using light spinning gear...what is the best lure etc to use and being from Langley what area is good to target?
Thanks ;D
-
They say "pink for Pink", but they seemd to take everything while I was targetting Coho last year in the vedder. Was chucking, wool and blades.
-
Does anyone here like eating pinks?
-
1/2 oz. pink Zzingers. Anything pink will catch them.
-
My dad is already stoked for the pinks. Little pink spoons will get them in the rivers, as well as pink flies (I get them on pink/purple popsicle flies). The Harrison river from Kilby to the Fraser mouth can be quite productive, we were able to get into quite a few last season. The mouth of the Fraser can also be quite good at times.
If you're looking to that salt, I got my first salmon a few years ago on a big pink buzz-bomb. I was fishing in Cates Park in North Vancouver, it's a pretty good spot if you get it at the right time of the season.
My parents actually really like eating pinks, it was from the ocean, and had been frozen for 1-2 days, I was suprised considering what I've heard about pinks not keeping well. It was done on the BBQ, and we had a few people over, they all seemed to like it.
-
they are great smoked
-
if the pinks are there, your son should have a hoot.
on the fraser, a tuft of yarn the size of your thumbnail should do the trick (pinks seem to respond to the bigger size, unlike on the vedder where smaller is better). if you use pink, you have a better chance of hooking onto more doe's. if you go darker, you're more likely to hook onto humpies (a big pain in the my friend).
i don't usually target the pinks, but i will keep a doe or two for roe.

So far most have been giving information on pink fishing in the freshwater. I would only focus the effort on saltwater pinks as they are strong, fresh, very willing to bite and excellent for eating.
Peak time in tidal Fraser starts from around September 5th (Richmond... so maybe September 6th in Langley. No kidding, I fish for pinks hard starting late August and the last three seasons September 5th is always the first day I bump into them in Richmond, Delta, New West).
For the spinning setup: Rod, I would go with something that is rated between 4 and 10lb test. The spinning reel, get a Shimano in the 2500 or 3500 series. Don't get a rear drag one, a front drag will still be intact after 200 fish in two weeks. :) My recommendation: Shimano Sonora 2500FA. Line should be Maxima Ultragreen 8lb test, strong yet light enough and handle abrasion pretty well. Lighter setup is fine too, but I find it puts too much stress on the gear (especially expensive light setups...) after so many fish.
Lures: Anything works really. Gibbs 1/4 or 1/8 Crocs in pink, green, orange, yellow, red... Spinners, Blue Fox if you want to spend the big bucks. My spoons if you want to go cheap. ;) FA's Zinger sounds good too, exccept he fishes differently to the rest of spin guys. He casts with his baitcasting setup and jigs it back. It works well if the fish are really far out as he can cast further than others with the solid lure. Most of the time is unnecessary, as fish are 20, 30 feet from shore.
Technique: Cast and retrieve. The lure does not necessarily have to be on the bottom. Many times the pinks will "nibble" on the lure as the fish follows it back to shore. When nibbles take place, continue to reel in and most of the time a solid strike will take place soon after. Don't lift your lure out of the water too soon as many times the fish will strike right by your feet.
Two hours before incoming tide to peak tide is prime time, but there are excepetions. Many times I find they will actually sneak in the river when the water is at its lowest.
Locations: Not sure about Langley, but they should be passing through Derby Reach too. In Richmond, Delta, Surrey etc, anywhere along River Road will produce fish. Don't fish areas where strong current exists. Find spots where the water is sluggish right by the main channel.
For freshwater, drifting a pink worm under the float in main flow will get you into many fish. For the Fraser, if you find some sluggish water, chuck a spoon or a pink marabou jig and be prepare to get a pair of sore arms. To avoid pinks when fishing for coho in the Vedder, simply fish shallower with bait.
For eating, ocean fresh fish are fantastic for the BBQ. I would think they are good when smoked too. I don't bother with any freshwater pinks, saving my quota for the hatchery coho if I am going that far.

agreed. nice not to always have to drive 100 kms to get to a good fishing hole ;) especially for better quality salmon. :)

ohhh...goodie goodie....I am already looking forward to pink season!
-
We had a blast last year in the Maple Ridge area using copper spoons, also one vote for the Shimano rear drag, as well as the fancy ones Ive got an old third hand one thats never ever let me down.
-
Don't buy the pink for Pinks line; while it works under some condtions, Pinks can be selective. Just ask anyone who has fished them in the Harrison. "I Said Fished Them, Not Snagged Them." Your best to get a local updated at your tackle shop before you go.

I float fish for them at Gary Point using a pink spin'n glow wow do they ever bite hard!! :o cant wait

i've lived in richmond practically all my life. i don't think, i've ever seen so many people target the pinks, as much as in 2003.
now that the word is out, richmond's dykes are going to be a zoo. :P
-
Yeh for sure but there lots of dyke!!

yah, but there's no shortage of meat hunters either ::)
-
oh yeh meat hunters!! lol
-
the good thing about pinks, is that they help, to take some of the pressure off, of the other species of salmon. at least where the meat hunters are concerned ::)

sounds good, but i'm pretty much done this season. i'll definitely keep that in mind next spring.
you're only five minutes away. i live the 3 and steveston area. ;)

sounds good just drop me a pm anytime!

Shh, quit exposing the secret! That stretch between No. 3 Road and No. 2 Road can only cater about 500 anglers! ;D
I don't know why I didn't take photos last year when it was really festive. Oh ya! I was too busy offering FA some charity fish! ;D :-* I must admit though, he does have some good days. There was one day when everyone else including us came up empty handed while he almost limited out by tossing 50 feet further than others. :)
Not much happening down there right now, not until April anyways. When the time comes I'll show you where those big bull trout are five minutes from your house. ;)

I hate pink years. Too damn many of the little buggers. They always sit in coho water and are more agressive too! lol. I plan on getting a nice light weight spinning rod this summer and going for pinks in the fall in the fraser, vedder, harrison, etc for them. Don't plan on keeping any, just C&R on light tackle ;D i don't like the flesh of pink salmon, always too mushy.
They sit in all water last year I would almost cast into every type of water ad couldnt get rid of the buggers.
No ncessarily true, but most will make you believe that. Last year we were getting into coho in September while pinks were stacking upstream and other places around us, but not the stretch where we were fishing. Hard to find of course, lots of walking will reward you in the end.

i actually watched the festivities. i got a kick out of watching newbies hooking into pinks. its nice to see people appreciating them...unlike some of us who've become spoiled.
i also enjoyed giving some pointers to those who wanted to listen. the only down side, was some people weren't following regulations and some were trying to keep more than they were entitled to....that worries me :(
some of my brother's buddies fished for them on the fly. i took a pass on fishing for them.

Despite the festive atmosphere, it was surprisingly civil! I think a lot of people drove by, saw people fishing, and went to Canadian Tires and bought some stuff to try out their luck too. These were the ones who did not have any idea regarding fishing licenses and regulations. We informed a few and they quickly went to buy one before returning to receive more pointers. Quite a few people were using treble hooks, and they were also surprised that those were prohibited. They quickly changed up after being informed. People were well behaved, friendly, and social! :)
There was only one occasion during the entire season that got me going pretty good. After the crowd left towards the end of the day (on September 5th, the first day I started hitting them crazy on my own in the afternoon and phoning all the buds at work to get down there and enjoy the fishing with me. They showed up soon after around 3pm, so did many others who drove by :) ), two individuals showed up. These two were definitely locals, based on their dress code and speech. They immediately headed to the shore and proceeded to cast the line out with two bare trebles attached above the weight. Quite a display in an open area with joggers, walkers etc walking by. They ripped and ripped after each cast. They knew exactly what they were after. Fortunately, the bulk of the run that day had passed. ;) A phone call to the men in uniform did not produce result, as it was almost 8pm.

Offering me charity fish ? What the heck have you been smoking Rod ? Whatever it is that you are smoking or drinking you better stop or it will kill you. I remember that day well. According to my log, it was Sept. 9 I hooked over 20 pinks that day casting Zzingers while you locals were staring with your tongues hanging out your mouth. You will recall I was offering YOU a fish but I guess you were too proud to accept it in front of your friends. ;D :D
-
Hmm... I think your memory needs some refreshment. That was Steelhead King, as he continued to praise how well you were doing that day... ;) BUT! On September 11th, after my brief success at North Arm, I came down to No. 3 Road pier to see how you were doing. You reported a very slow day and the tide was already going out strong. I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a go anyways. I took out my homemade spoon, and one willing pink fell for it ten feet from shore after ten casts or so. I remember those envious eyes staring at me as I proceeded to net the fish. ;D Do you also remember... after about 3 or 4 fish, the older Chinese gentleman was getting rather frustrated just downstream from us and came up to see what I was using. He bought one of my homemade spoons and got into one fish few minutes later. He lost that fish as he decided to lift it instead of using his net. ::) That fish came off the hook and tumbled straight into the drink as we gasped. Not to worry of course, as he soon hooked into two more fish, which I netted for him. You then pulled out the spoon you bought from me a day or two before that and started to spin with it. The result was not as successful as the older gentleman. ;) You then started going on about that I sold you a defective spoon...... ::) ;D
I think a pink derby is needed in 2005. ;)
-
You do have a vivid imagination Rodney ! Obviously Steelhead King knows a master at work when he sees one ! ;D Interesting you neglected to tell us about the sockeye you hooked that day ! A pink derby is definitely in order in 2005 !

Smoke them. Also, they are good if you steam them and then flake the meat into a creamy tomato sauce with sundried tomatoes and artichoke hearts, served over a bed of your favorite pasta. :D
-
I have a way of smoking pinks that turns them into what I call "Salmon Bacon". It really works well. Then, once smoked, I slice the flesh thin, and fry it. A healthy alternative to bacon.
-
LAST TIME WE WERE OUT i HAD GOOD LUCK WITH PINKS ON A PINK FLY ,ALSO A FAIRLY SPARSLEY TIED FLY MADE WITH POLAR BEAR HAIR AND STIFFENED WITH HEAD CEMENT . THEY REALLY SEEMED TO LIKE IT . WE FOUND THAT IF WE TOOK THE HIDE OFF THEM AND REMOVED THE FAT ALONG THE LATERAL LINE THEY WERE EXCELENT EATING . A LITTLE MESSY BUT THE EATING IS WORTH IT . CERTAINLY AS GOOD AS THE SO CALLED FRESH SOCKEYE WE GET IN OUR STORES OUT HERE .

hmm, I remember that fish. Rod you flossed it with your spoon ;)

I think Rodney is trying to live that down ! ;D

Will you share it?

I was helping you out CF. I recalled you bonked 6 day that day. Limit is FOUR ;D

If you really want to have some fun go up to the Indian River, to when the Pinks are coming in as you can walk across there backs.
SHHHHHHH! Nice Chinook run too!
