Post by: BUBBA on October 31, 2004, 10:05:59 PM
Caught a few of these in the prawn trap in Pender a month ago. Any ideas on what it is.  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/ARRJ/3.jpg

It's called a squat lobster or galatheid crab (munida quadrispina).

It's often caught by commercial shrimp fishermen.

Are they edible?  (i.e. actually good?) Do they sell them for 1/2 price?  Seems to be missing half  ;D

You would need to eat several hundred of these to fill your stomach. They contain as much meat as a ghost shrimp.

We catch them all the time while prawning Alberni Inlet. Did try them for steel a couple of times, but found small prawns and/or shrimp to be far better.

Cheers,
